Whilst this is hardly new territory Zane seems to take it to a new low, his sole goal being to humiliate his victim until they have about as much self-esteem as a garden snail. Then there's 'Neg,' a tittering Neanderthal who seeks no greater joy in life than to hurl fast food at innocent pedestrians, and the Annoying Devil, a man who believes 'annoying' and 'criminal damage' mean the same thing. It is a well known rule of comedy that there is a fine line between mockery and humiliation, and Balls of Steel is a show that is definitely standing on the wrong side. Usually I have a quite a good sense of humour, and have no qualms about watching someone receive a few good natured pokes in the ribs, shows like 8 out of 10 cats and Have I Got News For You being good examples of quality comedic banter, but Balls of Steel is just...juvenile. The series consists of a long line of amateur comedians, who attempt to win the 'Balls of Steel' trophy by proving how metallic their nethers really are, mainly by irritating members of the public and hosting a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A puerile modern update on Beadles About (487 words)
by - written on 16/08/09 (Very useful, 39 readings)
Rating:

Presented by Mark Dolan, this late night Channel 4 comedy is totally hit and miss, the idea is for varying comedians to do things which are outrageous, the studio audience then vote on who has balls of steel. The show has a variety of acts varying from two members of Dirty Sanchez smashing things on varying parts of their anatomy, literally appearing to have balls of steel at times, this is old fashioned horrific tv and watching people hurt themselves for audience laughs is a bit outdated and embarrassing. Another act is tv presenter and Dj Alex Zane who presents a made up quiz show, he winds contestants up by questioning them, ensuring they can't ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Big Shiny Balls Of Steel (659 words)

Rating:

Balls Of Steel is a somewhat controversial TV comedy show which was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK and was presented by Mark Dolan. To date there has been three series. The idea of this show is that the 'acts' perform pranks or stunts on the unsuspecting public (and occassionally celebrities) infront of hidden cameras and, at the end of the show, the studio audience choose who has the biggest 'balls of steel' (who was the bravest). I personally found this very hit and miss. Some of the sketches were hilarious whereas others were dull and even annoying. I particularly like 'Neg's Urban Sports'. This consists of the lead character, Neg, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Outrageous and very funny (562 words)

Rating:

Daring, outrageous, risque and provocative - and a jolly good laugh. I actually first encountered this program quite recently, and thought, hmm, looks interesting, bit like a modern Trigger Happy TV. Except that the exploits this lot get up to make Trigger Happy TV look so tame it's untrue. The clue is in the show's title - audience members must vote for the act they think has the biggest 'balls of steel' to carry it off. Which is a thinly disguised excuse to air some of the bravest, funniest and most outrageous pranks played on the British public ever. Let's take a look: Alex Zane (or, the bloke who hosts a fake game show) takes ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Balls Of Steel: Bullies don't have balls (405 words)
by - written on 08/05/09 (Very useful, 54 readings)
Rating:

Balls of Steel is a show which sets out to humiliate members of the public and thus advance the career of the 'comedians' that take part in the show. It must be great being so talented, that your last resort is to go out and about taking pot shots at members of the public, making them feel stupid, humiliated and embarrassed. So, you are funny, talented and have the gift of the gab. Why go making other people feel stupid? Why not use your talent and your big mouth to actually get on a stage and see if you can say something funny that doesn't involve making an idiot out of someone who is just minding their own business. Oh yes. I know the ...  Read the complete review
