Since the departure of Brian Quigley it has lost much of its appeal and desperation was seen in the fact that Quigley's character was very poorly replaced in the new landlord of Fitzgerald’s bar. It was a tragic attempt to keep the original banter between Quigley and the two local handymen, Donal and Liam, alive. BallyK was once a place where for fifty-five minutes the viewers could forget themselves and just laugh away at the harmless fun or become engrossed in the sometimes-compelling story lines. But with the death of the local Garda and his father in law, the irreplaceable Quigley, it was realised that B... more

BallyKissangel: Land of Dreams, BallyK (239 words)

Ballykissangel was and in some senses still is the idyllic Irish village community. Soft story lines and friendly comedy are the main frame of the programme. But in its fifth series some may say that the show is running dry in the producers of Bally K's eyes and surely it has become its own ruin. Since the departure of Brian Quigley it has lost much of its appeal and desperation was seen in the fact that Quigley's character was very poorly replaced in the new landlord of Fitzgerald’s bar. Ballykissangel is the story of a small Irish village. Shown on BBC1 on a Sunday evening, it is a typical Sunday evening programme with beautiful scenery, quirky characters, strong community, and gentle storylines. Now into its fifth series, the program has undergone a change of characters. Originally featuring Dervla Kirwan and Stephen Tomkinson as the local landlady and priest, in a will they/won't they story, now the program has a much more ensemble cast, and more cliched stories. It is good entertainment, but it is not gripping, challenging, or especially original. Just what you want as you collapse in front of the telly at the end of a ...  Read the complete review
