Advantages: Great show for its time

Disadvantages: Sadly outdated

As a child, I grew up enjoying a range of reruns on TV as well as a good mix of new programmes. Of my favourutes rerun shows was Batman. Not the cartoon or any of the more modern versions, but the original 1960s TV series, starring Adam West and Burt Ward as superhero Batman and his trusty sidekick Robin the Boy Wonder.

The show only aired for two years originally, from 1966 to 1968, thus there are only a limited number of episodes, but to me, they seemed endless, and it didn't matter if I saw one I had already seen before. Each story was in two parts, with the first ending in a cliffhanger, usually with Batman or Robin in perilous danger that they can't seem to escape from, and then the second episode closing out the story.

Batman was based on the comic book character of the same name, originally seen in the DC comics. Batman had a wide range of enemies, including the Joker, the Riddler and Catwoman, with Burgess Meredith perhaps standing out in his portrayal of the Penguin. The episodes involved some pacy action musical accompaniment, particularly where there were fight scenes, dodgily choreographed and with word action appearing on the screen such as 'Kapow!' and 'Blam!' It had its own magic which is parodied to this day in TV shows and films.

I highly enjoyed the reruns of Batman when I was younger. I'm not sure if they are rerun any more, but if you have the inclination to, they are worth a watch. I found them highly entertaining, although I feel that the youth of today may find them particularly with the more modern styles of Batman all over the place.

Summary: Great TV show for its time that may not appeal so much any more
