Advantages: Nice ideas, lovely ships

Disadvantages: Copy of Star Wars, so much recycled material

Soon after the Star Wars phenomenon many companies wanted to try and emulate it's success. This was the result of one of those attempts. When an evil robot race known as the Cylons wipe out the home planet of the humans (Caprica) the survivors are left to form a fleet and go in search of a new home, a planet they have heard of in legend called Earth.
Led by Commander Adama (Lorne Greene)and his pilot son Apollo (Richard Hatch) the rag tag fleet makes its way across space, pursued by the Cylon Base-ships. Much of the Han Solo style humour is provided by Lieutenant Starbuck (Dirk Benedict), whilst Apollo remains in the Luke Skywalker role.
Its all good fun here, but an obvious attempt to copy Lucas' classic. The biggest let down is the majority of wooden acting, and the fact that so many scenes in the battles (explosions etc) are used again and again, showing up the tender budget the film obviopusly had. It was designed as the pilot to the TV series, and this ran well for a good few years, and then returned after the success of Return Of The Jedi, with new heroes and the Earth discovered, however the flaws remained.
Battlestar Galactica was good fun, and the TV series had some great episodes, but it will never be considered a classic.
