Advantages: keeps kids quite whilst waiting for breckie

Disadvantages: walk about humming the songs all day

What a great programme. For those of you how have not discovered The bear in the big blue house he is on chaanel 5 every morning at 8am. It is great.

It has all the componants which make a popular children's programme.

The characters are so clever, bear of course the grown up, like geoffery in Rainbow but a bear of course. He is the main character, hence the title. A huge orange bear with a very soft and gentle manner. He looks after all the other creatures in the house like OJO the little baby bear, treelow, a lima thingy with a fluffy tail which cannot talk properly (similar to sweeps character from sooty, The doppy, silly one), the two purple otters, pip and poop and tutter the strange whiney little mouse.

Every morning bear pretends he can smell YOU by sniffing the screen. Every morning my daughter giggles at this. Each episode has a theme and is really quite useful. The normal kids stuff. Teaching about gravity, changes, season, the dentist and the best one, injections. All supported by great songs, pictures and stories.

Shadow is another character which bear calls apon to tell the story. Is a shadow of kermit the frog with a ponytail and a stranage squeeky irish accent which is a bit bizzar but the children seem to like it. She jumps about giggling telling the story.

A particaully good episode was the one where they taught the viewers about vaccinations. Really dealt with it in a sensitive way. Explained why we have to have an injection and sang a song called "just say oahh, say it now, just say oahh and it's over" Obviously to explain how to cope with the injection. this really worked for my neice although the nurse did give my sister a strange look when she sat there singing this from the top of her voice whilst my niece was having her injection. Of course we can buy all the merchandise which costs a fortune in the shops, this includes the book covering the points in this
episode.

The best part of every show is the goodbye song. The bear sings with the moon the goodbye song which is really catchy and My daughter insists on singing over and over. Then at last the end. *sigh*

Then start to get ready for the beechcomber bay dance which follows.......

Sounds great - Holly would love this only we can't get channel 5. We are getting Sky at Christmas though so I will look out for it then. Jo
