Being Erica is a great quirky entertaining show at first you think it's a typical American Sit-com but its not. First of all it's set in Toronto in Canada and it's all about a girl named Erica Strange played by Erin Kerpluk. It does an American flavour to it but that's not a bad thing.
The plot is that Erica is in her late 20's and like many people she carries a lot of baggage and regrets in her life. She feels that her life is going nowhere and that she hasn't achieved anything. She is advised to see a physiatrist called Dr Tom and eventually she goes to have a chat in his office. He is a brilliant character and helps to make the show. He asks her to list all her regrets out and she promptly does this and it's a massive list. He works through each thing one at a time. He seems to be very fixed on getting a commitment out of her to follow through with his programme. This is where it all changes. Every item on the list is discussed and after the discussion she is taken back in time to relive the regret in any way she sees's fit. It's great to see her thrown into the past as a teenager, collage student or any time from her past. Dr Tom's office moves at will at she can walk into it at bizarre times without knowing when or where. Sometimes she can go through her office door or toilet door and end up in his office any time day or night.
That's the basic plot, now I will take you through some of the other characters:
Gary Strange (John Boylan) - Erica's Dad who is also a Rabi and seems to have spent much of his life smoking dope. He is divorced from her mother and you learn more about this as Erica goes back in time more and more.
Barbara Strange (Kathleen Laskey) - Erica's mother who she has a strained relationship with, but loves her really.
Samantha Strange(Joanna Douglas)- She is Erica's younger sister who she is very close to at the start but things get harder with her, mostly due to Sam's husband who is a real sleaze.
Leo Strange (Devon Bostick) - He is Erica's younger and much loved brother. As series one moves on you realize that he has died at some point. When she goes back in time she tries to advise him so he won't do whatever it was that caused his death. She soon finds out that there's certain things she can't change.
Josh Macintosh (Adam Macdonald) - This is Samantha's husband and he is quite a nasty sleazy character. I won't give too much away about what he gets up to.
Ethan (Tyron Leitso) - Erica's best friend since collage. There's a lot of chemistry between the two of them but I wont give away how that story progresses. At the start of series one he is married but separated. Ethan lives next door to Erica.
Katie (Sarah Gadon) - She was best friends with Erica as a kid but had a big fallout sometime throughout the years and this is another regret of Erica's
Judith (Vinnessa Antoine) - Currently Erica's best female friend she is married at the start of season one with a baby on the way. I'm not very keen on this character I always have the impression she is just waiting to fall out with Erica.
Julie-Anne (Reagan Pasternak) - She is her boss and a really bitchy back stabbing boss who is always putting Erica down. Brilliant character.
Brent (Morgan Kelly) - He is Erica's co worker and well dressed, quiet and I think as things move on he will become dangerous.
This can be quite a feel good series but not in a cheesy way. Dr Tom always has a quote for every situation from an ancient philosopher to a modern day saint and has even been known to quote Yoda. Dr Tom also turns up in the past to help her and guide her. What's really nice is to see how she is changing. I'm now part way through season two and I feel its well worth the watch. It's written by Jana Sinyor and first released in 2009. Give it a go. I got the information for the actors who play all the characters from Wikapedia.
Summary: Really good well worth a watch
