Advantages: Nice characters, fun for kids
Disadvantages: Some voices a bit too similar to Peppa Pig characters
Ben and Holly is a relatively new programme to the Nick Jr television channel, and my kids have just started watching this over the past couple of weeks. It is on in the mornings at 10am and later in the afternoon at 4:30pm.
Ben is an elf who lives with Mr Elf and Mrs Elf in Elf Windmill and Ben Elf is best friends with Fairy Princess Holly who lives in Little Castle. Princess Hollys parents are King & Queen Thistle and Holly is looked after and taken care of by Nanny Plum. For those of you who watch Peppa Pig, you will find that a lot of the voices are very similar, for example Nanny Plum has the same voice as Mrs Rabbit in Peppa Pig, and The Wise Old Elf has the same voice as Grandpa Pig. Princess Holly is learning magic and can sometimes get her spells wrong, in a recent episode I watched she accidentally turned Ben Elf into a rabbit!
The show is predominantly aimed at pre-school children, though I have to admit that at the age of 25 I actually quite like watching this too, and it is of a lot higher standard than some of the weird cartoons they have for children nowadays. My daughter has really got into this show in the past couple of weeks and has started calling herself Fairy Princess Emma!
The individual episodes last approximately 10 minutes each which I think is a good length of time for a pre school child to keep them entertained and stop them getting bored half way through. It uses clear and colourful animation and the voices are easy to understand. The stories tend to be based around real life situations such as sports day for example, but they add magical elements just to make them that bit more interested and it can be quite an enjoyable cartoon to watch.
Overall, this is a great new programme for toddlers and I can see it becoming very popular. No doubt there will probably be an overpriced toy range out by Christmas which I will probably end up buying, but for now I shall continue to enjoy this short animated series with my children on a regular basis.
Summary: Great show, highly enjoyable

- 19/06/09 Funny enough, my daughter has never really taken to this series, which is a shame, as I rather enjoy watching it. Nice write-up. 8^) |
