I'm a geek...So naturally am a little sceptical about anything with geek humour in it - will they really be geeky enough? Will they get all the geeky references just right? - although, obviously, as a geek, I love nothing better than pointing out errors in TV shows :o)
Also, I'm a sceptic of American sitcom humour...Joke, giggle, joke, giggle.
The Big Bang Theory, then, doesn't seem like a show that should immediately appeal to me...and indeed, on the few occasions I caught a little on E4 whilst flicking, I was left underwhelmed.
On one occasion, however, I thought something was pretty funny and was drawn in to watching the rest of the show...and I was pleased I had. Sure, the format's very American - they set up a geek joke, the audience laughs and it rolls on, but actually, a fair amount of the jokes actually have me laughing, so I don't mind quite so much. There are geek-references the show gets wrong on occasion, but I can forgive them that, too - as there are a good deal of others so geeky even I don't get them.
I've now got the first two series on DVD and am thoroughly enjoying watching through them...I'll be honest, 99% of the reason I watch is Sheldon...David from Rosanne doing his "geek voice" *does* still grate on me occasionally. The other two, Raj and Howard, I find solid performers - although Howard, for my taste, is rather too like Seth, the Actor's character in Joey (I know, I was *the guy* that watched the show...)
Penny, I find a little annoying at times, pretty funny at others ("Oh look - it's raining yoooou!") - but I guess it's necessary to have a non-geek in the show to provide geek put-down humour.
Overall, it's a very funny show, well cast and scripted - and it's rare to see an episode without a couple of classic lines.
Summary: Very funny show, better than you might expect.
