Advantages: better, tense, more volatile
Disadvantages: dividing bars, Jade
After reading opinion after opinion regarding Big Brother's 'demise,' I feel it my duty to argue for the defence so to speak. I am not a die-hard fan of the show. I don't have the irritatingly irritating 'big brav' tune as my ring tone nor do I participate in the annoying, obsessive and far too opinionated everyone's-an-expert daily public discussions upon the subject. But I do make a conscious effort to catch the show every night. Having witnessed every Big Brother series since 2000, I would hand on heart say this series is so far the best to date. The characters seem to be very well selected to a point where there seems to be always tension between what is a very volatile mix of people. This series has had more laughter, crying, outbursts of anger, bitching and obscene drunken behaviour than the others. And this is despite the flawed attempts to spice things up on the part of the show's producers. I mean, the rich-poor divide- what the hell was that all about? You can picture some producer sat there racking his brains thinking 'What can we do to make the show more interesting?'... Then all of a sudden, ding! His eyes light up. 'I know! We'll divide the house up in two, thus restricting character interaction and producing starving, unmotivated and unenthusiastic people on the poor side. WOW!' Wow indeed. Nevertheless, even in bar-free, week one, tension among housemates was apparent. What?s her name again? Oh yeah Lynn got so annoyed at the fact that she couldn't neatly pigeonhole MrIdontgiveaf**k Spencer that she openly scrutinised his inability to fit into her pigeonhole. "I can't conceive how a man as young as yourself can be so arrogant" she states with the indignity of drunkenness, to which he amusingly refuses to reply. I personally found this hilarious and a great way to kick off the show. The show didn't loose its spark as in the weeks to follow we
saw hygiene obsessive Alex up the ante as he continually scolds the hygienically challenged likes of Johnny and the rather plump Alison for their dirty deeds, namely peeing in the shower thus sparking off a general consensus of hatred towards himself. The tension was on a high. Meanwhile we saw 'womanising' Lee carelessly toggle between Adele and new girl Sophie. Adele, incidentally, proclaiming she is a practising lesbian, yet still a virgin (take from that what you will). Parallel with this we see the passive attention seeking Sandy perform the never previously attempted, death-defying stunt that is escaping over the big brother wall. Go Sandy! Lee goes, paving the way for Adele and 'Jade the genius? to have a continuous, collaborative bitch about Sophie. Combine this with Pj n Jade's and Kate n Spencer's alleged respective 'romps,' Adele and Jade's varuca based mother-of-all-Big-Brother arguments (the Nasty Nick situation possibly being exempt) and Alex and Adele's tongue-filled kiss. Which brings us to date. Recently we have seen Pj emotionally cripple Jade to the delight of the masses, we've seen Jade strip completely naked in front of the rest of the gang (not necessarily desired I may add. urgh!) and Tim's unwelcome ginger roots. There has definitely been more incident in this series than in the others. Can you remember anything significant that happened in the last Big Brother? How people can claim this year's Big Brother is not interesting is way beyond me. However I hope this quality can be maintained which seems difficult in that with the exception of maybe Jade, all the characters like, or all least happily tolerate each other, which is an ominous formula for boredom.
