Advantages: Gives you an insight into people's behaviour

Disadvantages: Some disturbing behaviour being exhibited

I agree with the previous reviewer in that for many of the summers that have gone by in the last decade, I have been glued to the television to watch the Channel 4 10pm showing of Big Brother. When it first came out it was ground breaking and gave us the ability to watch all aspects of people's lives - almost as if they were in a gold fish bowl.

Big Brother brings together a selection of people that would otherwise not give each other the time of day: BB9 is no exception! The original sixteen housemates are from a wide variety of backgrounds, which range from being a radio producer (Michael) to being a masseuse (Khathreya) to being an Executive Chef (Rex).

So far, two of the original members have already been "ejected" for unacceptable conduct. First of all it was Alexandra (Accounts Executive) with her constant barrage of aggressive behaviour towards other housemates. What sealed her early exit was when she threatened other contestants that might potentially nominate her with "gangster friends" that would act upon her orders. That's taking the game to a whole new level; in my opinion she deserved the boot.

The second person to be rightfully ejected was Dennis (teacher and dance student). After getting involved in an argument, Dennis spat at Mohammed (toy demonstrator at Hamleys). What is despicable about Dennis' behaviour is that he is a teacher; he has a direct hand in the moulding of young people, it would seem that he momentarily put that aside when he behaved as he did.

As a teacher myself, I understand that we are rarely "off duty" - especially when in the public eye. We have a responsibility to those young people that look up to us to be the best that we can be at all times. I know that is a lot of pressure, however it is an unwritten agreement that we all take on when we accept the post. I really feel that Dennis let himself down by resorting to such unnecessary behaviour.

Anyway, that is another discussion; back to BB9...

Stephanie (student), Mario (former Tag Officer for the Home Office) Luke (student) and Lisa (Sales representative) faced the first public vote. They were not nominated by other housemates, it was because they failed their task that they were up. Stephanie was the first evictee after receiving the lions share; she received 48% of the vote.

Sylvia was the second housemate to be officially evicted from the house; 90.2% of those that voted chose her to go! That is one of the highest percentages since BB was first aired in 2000. The only other contestant from any of the previous eight series that received such a high percentage of the votes was Sezer (BB7) with 91.6%!!!

This week, Jennifer (part-time model) goes head-to-head with Rex as they face the public vote. Both Jennifer and Rex received six votes each! There is no doubt that Jennifer will lose this one as she has not done herself any favours by choosing to be particularly spiteful towards Rex.

Whilst I have not watched every episode this time, I still find myself drawn to the television at 10pm! It's on now and I'm watching today's antics: The housemates are completing a challenge where they are dressed up as animals learning songs, demonstrating boxing skills, eating carrots and performing tricks.

What BB9 does for me is to show me the lengths that people are willing to go to and what they are prepared to endure for fame and fortune! Crikey!

Summary: To what lengths would you go?
