Advantages: Good core idea
Disadvantages: Boring twists
I used to be addicted to Big Brother during the first few series, after all the Nasty Nick business happened on my birthday and united us as a family and the infamous moment that Alex mimed 'That's the way I like it' randomly to a camera kept me laughing for ages. Series 4 seemed to be the only blip, with everyone vaguely interesting being evicted first, but after that BB5 reigned supreme ('No naked Jacuzzi-ness'). Though the following series were mostly interesting parts and characters such as Nikki, Pete, Grace, Makosi, Craig, Kemal, Charley and Chanelle, the problem was that many of these characters would be voted out early on or would peak too early, with the series experiencing a lull towards the end. I feel that BB9 was the worst yet, with the silly fake wedding at the beginning making Stephanie a guaranteed evictee. Though Mario and Lisa with their delusions of fame and mutual appreciation of fake tan were amusing, there were also times when Alex's rants become tedious and contradictory and many moments of boredom towards the end.
I've decided to write some tips to bring Big Brother back to form:
1. Don't make the series too long
BB9 seemed to last forever, as it started later than most series and lasted till September, making it 13 weeks. I think a shorter series of about 9 weeks max is best, it's better to quit while your ahead rather than having weeks of nothingness after the one big argument that happens in week 4.
2. Don't put in too many housemates for the sake of it
This can get really confusing after a while, and can disrupt the flow of the house. Current housemates may not welcome the newbies, resulting in them being kicked out the following week, and they rarely seem to live up to their entrance videos. If decent housemates are picked in the beginning, there isn't really a need to put in any more except to replace people who have gone.
3. Make the twists foolproof
It's all very well and good offering two housemates the chance to take or share the money, but they should have worked out a better way to have a more controversial mix such as Rex and Rachel. I think that many of the twists end up being an anticlimax, and they really shouldn't be hyped up so much. There also shouldn't be early evictions, as some of the best characters can be lost that way. There needs to be a better way to get rid of the 'deadwood' throughout the series, maybe we vote and pick two housemates to be nominated, then the housemates choose the one to leave. Either that or vote to save, rather than evict.
4. Go away and then come back
I seriously feel that we need to have a break from Big Brother, of up to five years, to see what would happen and whether society is slightly less celebrity-obsessed. It could attract a new type of people, and hopefully the Chanelles and Chantelles of previous series would have long gone. It could go back to basics, with 10 housemates from different interesting backgrounds (note: no porn stars) and hopefully return to form even though I think it could be a good idea to...
5. Split the house then reunite
I always thought it would be a good idea to have 6 housemates go into one house and six into another, then to reunite them after a week or so. Of course they would probably guess this twist, but it would be interesting to see how personalities change when new people are added into the mix, in a new setting.
Summary: Needs a revamp
