Advantages: Sometimes compelling TV

Disadvantages: Becoming a tired concept

When Big Brother first launched in the UK almost a decade ago, I must confess to have only joined the show towards the end to see Craig win the prize. The rest of my family were raving about it and I felt compelled to see what all the fuss was about and from that moment on I was hooked. Nothing has changed on that score, but after the 2008 Big Brother I wish it had.

You see, what was good about Big Brother, in my opinion, has been destroyed. The fiest 2 or 3 series started out with what are deemed to be normal people in a house and the only way they could be evicted was for their peers to nominate them and then let the public decide. This worked extremely well and generally meant that dull and/or annoying people would be nominated and voted out early. However, for some reason, presumably to try and stir things up occasionally, Big Brother producers have decided it is now a good idea to intervene in this process at regular intervals and basically pick and choose who is likely to go. This is really not good for the show and it worked much better when the resposibility for who is up for eviction was solely down to weekly nominations. They do still have them, but that is all they should have.

There is now seemingly a shift away from the craze that set in a few years ago where every freak and its mother would try and get into the house for nothing more than what is perseved to be instant fame. What I now like is that, barring one or two early winners, you don't hear anything from them once the show is done and, for me, this is how it should be. It needs to be a 10 week show with the winner taking the money but then disappearing from our screens, simple as that.

The last 3 or 4 series of Big Brother have seen ratings drop continuesly and I am not surprised as for the most part they have been dull and un-inspiring series with contestants of little personality and Big Brother seems to be running short of interesting ideas. With this in mind, I believed that this coming series would be the last, but have since heard that another 2 have been comissioned beyond that. No doubt I will watch them, but I don't really want to.

Summary: Great in the beginning and needs to get back to basics
