Advantages: An interesting experiment in older series
Disadvantages: Series too long, poor standard of contestants
When Big Brother started, it was a very interesting experiment to see different people from different backgrounds living together for a number of weeks. However, as the series progressed, the show just got worse and worse.
The format is simple, a group of members of the public enter a big house, get shut off from the outside world, one gets voted out of the house each week until you're left with a winner, who wins a cash prize. Every week the housemates must take part in a task, how well they do in this task will be reflected in their shopping budget for that week, allowing them to buy food and mainly alcohol.
The format was working well, until around series 5, when it started to become a bit of a freak show, in the nicest possible way. In the more recent series, it's hard to find a typical member of the public amongst them, making it hard to relate and therefore be interested in what they're doing or what they have to say. The housemates are interested in only one thing now and thats the cash prize. Nobody goes in there for the experience now, and are already thinking about their new career in the outside world.
And if that wasn't bad enough, it also goes on for a long, long time. Each series now is lasting around 3 months, thats longer than any other reality show and in most cases longer than a series of your favourite drama or comedy.
The show has really suffered trying to find new ideas over the years and the format has become stale. I hear next series will be the last, but this is a show that should've been axed a long time ago.
Summary: A stale format
