Advantages: Addictive viewing that everyone always seems to talk about wherever you go ...

Disadvantages: When the series ends you realise that you have spent far too long watching it !!!

If George Orwell was still alive today I am pretty certain he would be less than impressed that the concept of "Big Brother" (that he so brilliantly created in his novel "1984") was being used as the title for a reality TV show in which a random collection of irritating people have to live together for three months. I am also certain that he would not be reaching for his phone to dial one of the numbers revealed at the end of the show when we hear the phrase "Who goes ? YOU decide" !!!

Orwell's vision of the future where Big Brother Is Watching You was (and still is) exrememly disturbing ... not as disturbing, however, as Channel 4's "Big Brother" !!!

Yet, despite my scathing attack on the show I have to admit that YET AGAIN I am strangley addicted to Big Brother and watch it on a nightly basis !!!

The word "addicted" isn't being used lightly either. Whilst out the other night having a drink on a lovely summer's evening I found myself nervously looking at my watch as it was 9.30pm and Big Brother was on at 10.00pm ... how sad is that ???

What makes it worse is that every year I say the same thing to family and friends ... "I'm not watching Big Brother this year, it takes up far too much time".

But then what happens every year ? That's right (you guessed it), I tune into the launch show and then am completely hooked from Day 1 ... we're now on day 79 and I find myself chatting away about Bea, Marcus and Sophie like I actually know them. I get annoyed when a housemate I liked gets evicted and I analyse every minute of the show trying to offer my own predictions about who might get nominated and who might win !

I'm sure that many people who read this will know exactly what I mean ... because they too make a very clear decision not to watch this year's series but find themselves tuning in night after night after night !!!

It's only when Big Brother finally ends that you realise just how much time it has taken up ... and that you have just spent most of the summer watching a group of random strangers insult, bully and bitch about each other in the name of entertainment.

But then I suppose it is entertaining because at the end of a day it is a gameshow ...

It's more than a gameshow, however, as it's a three month long game of survival which ultimately has just one winner. It's also a gameshow that brings out the best (and worst) in people and due to the claustrophobic nature of the Big Brother House creates a great deal of drama and conflict on a nightly basis. Big Brother may be in control of the housemates but it's human nature to rebel against authority so gameplans and strategies come into play. It is extremely interesting to see how some housemates try to forge alliances within their social group whilst others clearly try to turn their fellow housemates against each other ... and all because each week they must all nominate two of their fellow housemates to face the public eviction !

Each Friday the nominated housemate who receives the most public votes is evicted during the "live show" and has to leave the house and face the increasingly hostile crowd gathered outside ... and then the gmae within the house continues. Big Brother throws everything at the housemates to create conflict ... tasks and challenges need to be completed to earn money for food, housemates who break the rules are punished and on the few occasions when everyone seems to be actually living in harmony Big Brother just throws in a new housemate to stir up even more trouble (those of you who sae the look on Siavash's face when Noirin's ex-boyfriend entered the house will know exactly what I mean !!!).

Anyway, on and on it goes night after night until the final show when the phone lines close for the last time the votes are "counted and verified". The winner of the show is announced and Davina gathers all of the housemates together one last time in the grand finale !!!

Then it's all over ... and four weeks later you pass a local nightclub advertising a guest appearance and although you recognise the face on the poster as being one of this year's BB Housemates you can't quite remember their name !!!

Anyway, we're on "Day 79 in the Big Brother House" now so I will stick it out to the bitter end. However, I can assure you that there is no way I will be watching next year's Big Brother !!! And on a similar note The X-Factor returns next week too ... AND I BLOODY WELL WON'T BE WATCHING THAT LOAD OF OLD **** EITHER !!!
