Advantages: It only continues for 9 weeks
Disadvantages: A disastrous attempt at something new
This is one of those shows which either leaves you completely engrossed or is something which leaves you questioning why it has gained such popularity. The title big brother of course is based upon the a panopticon in which every aspect of your life is surveilled, where privacy no longer exists. In truth the prospect of this is quite horrifying but this is essentially what big brother is. The viewer essentially ends up watching a real life soap in which every aspect of someones personality comes under the microscope.
The premise is that 10 people are picked to spend 9 weeks in a house, their only freedom is they are permitted to going out into the garden but aside from that can not leave the premises. The contestants are given a number of tasks to do which will test how they cope as a team and keep the contestants active. At the end of each week, all contestants must nominate someone who they wish to evict from the house and usually this leaves the 2 least favoured housemates up for the public to vote on who they wish to remain in the house.
I know that psychologists probably feel like they can get a great insight into the human mind through such a laboratory experiment but from my perspective, this just seems like the opportunity for 10 attention seeking individuals to potentially gain great fame and perhaps fortune.
The type of people who usually reside seem to be either mentally unstable, completely devoid of intelligence or indeed simply boring. I have never seen anything which might resemble compelling viewing and leaves me in a state of tedium. If people consider being recorded 24/7 to be a torturous exercise then it's only the prelude to the torture I have felt watching this.
In addition to this, despite this being advertised and portrayed as being no holds barred, to avoid legal issues i.e. slander issues, the programme is not completely live. This means that there are often occasions where due to the conversation being held, the makers will cut off the conversation and or turn the camera away from what was being filmed.
Once again to me this simply underlines the pointlessness of the experiment. Perhaps I am too cynically minded but I do question what would possibly motivate someone to wish to be under the microscope for 63 days without respite. In truth it seems like money is the common denominator but as far as I am concerned, this then is a sad reflection upon society.
I truly avoid this programme like the plague, one to avoid
Summary: I need this like I need a whole in the head
