A once great TV programme has slid into a morass of sex, and bad behaviour (Big Brother (TV Series))

Advantages: Genuine interest for the first couple of years

Disadvantages: the obsession with sex, alcohol and creating tension

Big brother is a channel 4 show which in its first couple of years dominated the air waves in the summer of that year. The show is produced by a Dutch TV company Endemol and presented by Davina McCall.

The principal is simple, a group of housemates, no connection to the outside except via Big brother in the chair room and each week they nominate two members of the house for eviction, the housemates with the most nominations are then put up for eviction as voted by the populace. Every friday night there is then an eviction, and the numbers slowly drop until one remains and he or she wins £100 000.

the first couple of years, this show was genuinely intereting watching how people trapped is a house interacted, how they soon developed cliques and how friendships, rivalries started.

Thena round season 4 or 5, everything slowly started to change. Firstly the houemates became more extreme, rather than jonny public we would get A who hates gays, followed by an extremely camp gay who hates skin heads, followed by a extreme right wing skinhead etc etc.

Then the producers as an attempt to improve ratings started changing things, now after the first 10 or 12 people went in the house we would have alternate houses, evicted housemates return, potential housemates voted for by the public etc etc. Then we had the weird world of the celebrity versions, and finally we had the obsession of showing a couple having sex on British TV.

So now we are presented with nothing more than a freak show, this is TV from the readers of heat or ok and has lost any kind of higher plane of behaviorial studies. There is far too much focus on alcohol, sex, tension and struggles between house mates.

Big Brother is finally finishing next year, the last two or three years has rather limped along and the people in it have gone from front page news to barely a mention even in newspapers normally interested in them such as The Sun or the Star or the celebrity mags.

hopefully Endemol will end the show on a high, if it was me I'd go back to basics and have a group of 12-14 normal people and go back to little challenges for more money for food and less extreme evictions.

And hoepfully they will stop with the constant chopping and changing.
