Advantages: Original social experiment
Disadvantages: Mind numbing contestants, takes over all channel 4 channels for 3 months
When 'Big Brother' first appeared it was a cult phenomenon. Everybody watched it, and it was all people were talking about the next day around the water cooler. Airing on Channel 4 it is presented by the lovely Davina McCall.
Now nearly 10 years later, the veneer has faded. The format has changed slightly each year to try to keep things interesting, however the show has lost a lot of its viewers. Channel 4 have announced that 2010 will be the last series they will air, although Endemol will still produce the show, and are hoping to air on another network.
The premise of the show is that 14 contestants are put inside a house, where their every move is filmed for around 3 months. They have a diary room where they can go an confess their inner thoughts or just go to vent. Each week they nominate one another to leave the house. The two with the most votes are put to a public vote, and the one with the most votes is evicted. On eviction they are interviewed by Davina (and if they are female they appear scantily clad in FHM the week after) and are cheered or booed by the crowd.
Personally I dread 'Big Brother' time of year, every evening on Channel 4 there is a half hour or hour long show, as well as a spin off show where the audience debate events happening inside the house. In addition there is live feed from inside the house from about 10pm all the way through until about 10am. If the contestants swear, mention a brand or get too personal or risque, bird song fills the viewers ears for ages.
Back when 'Big Brother' was first aired, it was a very interesting premise. We are all aware of how CCTV and computer tracking and the like monitor our activities, so 'Big Borther' was an interesting social experiement. At the start contestants were often intellegent and varied, whereas now they are all airheaded pretty people trying to get famous.
I'll be celebrating next summer, regardless of who wins, because this show will no longer be cluttering up the telly.
Summary: Thank God it's nearly over!

- 09/11/09 Absolutely agreed. It's become a cash cow for C4 and very little else. |
