Big Brother (TV Series)
Advantages: The best reality show
Disadvantages: A bit past it's best now
Big brother is a reality game show that is shown on Channel 4 during the summer. There have been several series and this year is going to be the last. It is on every night for about 12 - 14 weeks (it varies with each series) any time between 8pm and 10.30pm depending on the day. Each show lasts for about an hour (or 45 minutes without adverts).
The idea of big brother is that there is a house with lot's of hidden cameras. Each series there are around 12 -16 contestants. In the first episode we see all of the contestants go into the Big brother house and learn a little bit about them. Once they are in the house they cannot leave until they are evicted. Each week all of the housemates (contestants) nominate two people they want to evict from the house. Once everyone has nominated, they two housemates with the most nominations are up for eviction. For the rest of the week the public vote on who should be evicted. The person with the most votes is then evicted on the Friday night live show.
By the end of the series there is usually 5 or so contestants left. During the last week the public vote for which housemate they want to win Big brother. The winner, quite simply, is the housemate with the highest amount of votes. On the final live show the last remaining housemates are evicted one after the other until only the winner is left. The winner, along with lot's of TV and magazine deals wins a large sum of money which can be between £50,000 and £100,000, this has changed a lot of series to series.
They do sometimes play around with the rules and change things for a week. Sometimes housemates can't nominate or other times, everyone will be will be up for nomination. They often twist the rules so that housemates don't know what will happen from week to week.
During the week the housemates compete in tasks and competitions in order to earn money for their food shop. When they have been awarded their food money for the week (depending on how well they have done in any tasks) they have to write a shopping list and then live on the food they can afford. This sounds simple but sometimes they only have as little as £1 per person per day to live on, which is not easy and often causes rows between the house mates.
All of the contestants are watched 24 hours a day and are even filmed in the shower. Those with sky and cable can view housemates through live streaming during the day and some of the night on E4. You can also watch live 24 hours a day on the internet through the website.
I have watched Big Brother from the very beginning and just love it. I do feel that they are doing the right thing in ending it at this series, as it is starting to lose it's appeal a little, even for me. It has made a lot of people famous, some that have gone on to make careers for themselves on TV and radio.
Big brother worked so well because at the time, it was very new and original. Several years on and there have been so many reality shows that everyone is sick of them now. The first series was without doubt the best for me, because those people going into the house did not know what would happen when they came out and really did seem to be themselves. They couldn't really have a game plan because they didn't know what the show would be like.
I have enjoyed Bog Brother for many years and will be sad to see it go. Davina McCall makes a fantastic host and really does connect with the contestants. She speaks to them all individually and asks or says what we're all thinking.
Summary: Davina McCall and all the events make this a very entertaining show
