Big Brother (TV Series)
Advantages: See different peoples personalities & how they reacte to different things,
Disadvantages: When housemates walk out who you like for silly reasons, the crowd booing for no reason
I had vowed at the beginning of the end of Big Brother 11 that I was most definitely NOT going to waste countless hours watching it. As you might have guessed, I failed miserably! Aside from the last series I have always found myself seated at the start of each show getting very involved with all the contestants yet the only reason why I started to take an interest in it was because it first aired whilst I was at school. Everyone was talking about it and so, wanting to be included with the conversations I began to watch each episode. And the rest, as they say, is history.
The idea of the show is very basic and when it first began back in 2000 I don't think the goggle box had witnessed anything quite like it. Placed into the Big Brother house, contestants, whittled down from thousands all enter the building not completely certain what to expect. 24 hours a day they are monitored with cameras and microphones which they have to wear at all times. Aside from when they are sleeping, washing or taking a dip in the pool. Although there is a television screen in this series no other forms of media or accessibility to the outside world are available to the housemates.
Set a task at the beginning of the week they have to win to get a luxury budget for their shopping otherwise losing could see them indulging in rice and chickpeas. Something which strikes fear in the smokers as they know cigarettes and tobacco will not be arriving in a large quantity.
The programme does have to change little things each year and this time round it has chosen the nomination process. Whilst each contestant still has to pick two housemates to put up for eviction, these few have the opportunity to put someone else in their place. Achieved by winning a task against their fellow possible evictees. Good and bad points come from this. The main ones being a person you like might get booted out because of someone else winning.
You also have the tree of temptation which is in fact a chest of drawers in the bathroom area. Instead of Big Bro pulling housemates to the diary room, something which can look suspicious at times, it speaks to an unassuming housemate maybe whilst they are innocently just brushing their teeth, and sets them a task to win a treat for themselves or the group. This doesn't always go to plan however when you have a stubborn person and punishment is necessary. So far I have been a little disappointed with what has been dished out wanting them to be a little more ruthless!
As each Friday dawns the eviction preparation begins and come 8:30 onwards you can see the nerves approaching on the housemates. Not exactly helped when you have the crowd chanting "Get Sunshine out!" at the top of their voices. After Davina yells the immortal words and the housemate climbs the stairs to inevitable booing and interview the remaining contestants are left contemplating life without said person in the house. The circle then beginning all over again.
There is a total of 12 housemates currently residing, three of them only entering a few days ago. It is a slightly odd combination of people. Bristolian Josie and Australian John James being my favourite as some of their fights and how they speak to eachother mirror myself and my younger brother. Whilst John is clearly sensitive the duo spark up a good chemistry with lots of banter even though at times it can get a bit out of hand. Threats of leaving after one went a bit over the top did get me a little concerned recently!
You have Steve, Corin and Ify. Three of which have not made much of an impression on me Corin mainly because of her continual screeching of "Oh my gawwdddd!!" Ben and Mario have an odd sort of friendship because the latter clearly has taken a fancy to the former but the feelings are far from mutual. Strangely Ben has no problem in resting his head on Marios crotch yet dare a kiss on the cheek appear he recoils like a small child. Dave is a close friend of the two who is very religious and open about his love of God. Caiomhe ( think that's right - pronounced Kee-Va) is not my favourite as I find her quite two faced although she has mellowed a lot since her side kick Shabby walked out. Andrew, Rachel and Keely have only just arrived so I don't have too much of an opinion on them other than Keely seems to be a bit of a sore loser and too bossy for my liking!
The programme is into its 5th week now and although the twists and turns have not really appeared I'm sure that there is a lot more fun to come our way. Even though it will probably only be remembered at the last Big Brother as the personalities are not as vibrant as past series it will still be something which I will miss come each summer. It is shown on Channel 4, aired from times between 8:30 - 10:30pm. It also has spin off shows Big Brothers Big Mouth and Big Brothers Little Brother.
I am a keen fan so obviously I'm going to recommend it to you, as it is the last one you don't want to miss out do you? No. Surely not!
