Advantages: I love it
Disadvantages: I hate it
Why do I enjoy picking on wannabes that get dumped on our TV screens on shows such as Big Brother? Because they're asking for it. Big Brother has been around since the start of the millennium and was a huge success. Over the years it died down because of a lot of deja vu and the contestants got crazy but not a pleasurable crazy. They wanted attention; and they got it.
The show starts off with strangers going into this big house one at a time in the public eye. After all the house-mates are in they're all very excited to meet their future house-mates. No contact from the outside world and they're just left with each other for a couple of weeks or even months under cameras 24/7.
This show is scary as fuck. It's just disturbing because I always say to myself that I won't even watch a second of it and then I end up watching it. It's reality shows like this that makes me turn off my TV. Though I have to be honest, there are some moments that I really enjoyed (providing I remember what they are and I don't re-watch it cringing). I love it because I hate it so much and I hate it because I love it too much. Make sense? No, I thought not. It's a show that plays with the mind of not only the contestants but the viewers.
Unlike the talent shows with the same style, it doesn't pretend to be glorious. Big Brother knows he's a jerk and he's proud if it. You know talent shows are like, "this is going to change your life forever and ever" whilst Davina MCcall says, "OH MY GOD YOU'RE THE GREATEST BIG BROTHER HOUSE-MATE EVER!" to everyone. Meanwhile Big Brother is still a jerk and the house-mates are still mad.
In order for the house mates to earn luxuries they have to preform tasks that usually include assault courses. Sometimes Big Brother assigns different house-mates certain tasks. Sometimes when they fail the task the house-mates might not get what they want and they preform a massive strop. Every tuesday they'd nominate which house-mates they want to evict and then the public decide who they want to evict on Friday.
On the long run, I find the show to be pointless. You don't learn anything, you can't remember everything and they use dirty tricks to pull viewers in. The only thing the show is good for is for screaming at the screen, but some people might view it as good eye candy. I personally think that they should have stopped doing the show after what happened between Jade Goody, Shilpa Shetty and that girl from S Club 7. But no, Channel 4 wanted to milk the Big Brother Cow as much as they can.
They promised that this years big brother would be the last ever, but channel 5 adopted it instead. I think there's another series going on. I know the ultimate Irish trolls of European television more commonly known as Jedward made people gather interest in the show again.
I find the celebrity versions of Big Brother a lot more entertaining than the regular Big Brother. I think it's because the regular version is far too long for my liking and I think just a couple of weeks is enough. I find with celebrities I like to watch celebrities make a fool out of themselves.
Overall I still feel pretty mixed about the show because half the time I don't know if I should be disgusted at the house-mates or feel sorry for them because I can't empathize with them. Would I really recommend the show? If you asked me five years ago, I'd probably say yes. If you asked me now I'd say no because it's well past it's sell by date and lost any appeal it had in the first place.
