Advantages: Lindsay Wagner
Disadvantages: It's quite campy at times!, Max, the bionic dog
In the mid-1970s, the TV show THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN (starring Lee Majors) was so successful that the producers decided that they wanted to create a spin-off series. This series would be based around a woman as opposed to a man, and so came into being THE BIONIC WOMAN. The lady in question was Jaime Sommers, a tennis pro who suffered a critial injury in a parachuting accident. Her life was saved via bionic surgery and as a result she could boast of bionic legs, a bionic arm, and an extremely sensitive bionic ear. Jaime was played by Lindsay Wagner, a former model whose good looks were a great draw for the male audiences of the '70s. To be honest, although I still enjoy watching the show today, it is very much due to its 'kitsch' value. I find myself laughing at many things that were meant to be taken seriously when the show was first aired but which now seem decidedly dodgy - particularly some of the acting and special effects. Some of the storylines are worth concentrating on, but I would definately avoid any which involve Max, the bionic dog. The character was revived in recent years in a series of 'reunion' movies with THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN himself, Steve Austin (played, as always, by Lee Majors).
