Advantages: Gave me a laugh

Disadvantages: Boring

Ahh... Sticky back plastic, Percy thrower, The elephant that pooed in the studio. All items that have appeared on one of Children TV's most long running programme that is Blue Peter.
There are just too many items to mention here but I hope to jog a few memories.

1) The elephant.
It came on in the black and White days with its keeper and talked to John Noakes ( then a presenter on the show). It then preceeded to leave a permanent reminder on the studio floor.

2) The Garden Vandals.
The Garden got vandalised that Blue Peter looked after. Things were broken and the fish pond wrecked. It turns out that a famous footballer was allegedly involved and has recently owned up to it.
A nation wept. Some with sadness and some with laughter.

3) Shep....Goldie...Kari and Oke...George the Tortoise.
The pets are as much a part of Blue Peter as any of the presenters. It gave deprived childern at home some form of bonding with animals if they could not have their own. The thing was, we only ever saw the tortoise once a year and that was when they were getting his box ready with hay and straw so he could hibernate!!!

4) A toilet Roll, washing up bottle, Sticky Back plastic and egg boxes.
The dreaded part of the week when all the little darlings around the country would pester their mother for these items. I know for One I did.
"hurry up mum. I want the washing up bottle" would by the cry of many 10 year olds. I want to build a lovely jewelry box.
The thing was, you normally had to improvise as you did not have half of the things. Do you know anyone that had double sided sticky tape? I odnt.

5) That terrible Green and White suit.
Peter Duncan offered viewers to design him a suit in a competition. I think it haunted him for years as the winner made him a horrible green and white suit. Poor bloke had to wear it and a nation's fashion statement was scared for life.

6)
The boring summer visits.
Every summer, the presenters would tap the BBC up for a free holiday and call it research. They would go off to somewhere far away, wasting licence payers money on a lavish safari or exploring the far east.
No one was interested in their foreign holidays. They should have spent the money on better competition prizes.

7) The charity appeals.
Regular as clockwork, november would see them launch their yearly appeal to help people around the world in trouble or famine. Good idea but it meant everyone else around the country had to suffer jumble sales, bring and buy sales and tin donating. They would always reach their target by Christmas and make everyone feel good for the big day.

8) The sacking incident.
Poor old Richard Bacon felt the wrath of the BBC by getting caught out snorting Cocaine at a party. The clean cut Blue Peter could not be associated with that and sacked him.
He is now making a living on the Big breakfast.

9) Tracey Island
Tracey Island was home of the Thunderbirds. It was then recreated with paper mache and all the items listed above by Anthea Turner. Millions of children built one for christmas one year. I bet if any still exist they look terrible!
How many recent Presenters can you remember? None as they are very unmemorable. It still provides limited enjoyment to lots of children though.

I remember Janet Ellis very well, although this is somewhat to do with the scandal of her becoming a single Mum whilst working on the show. Famous daughter too.

As for the famous footballer, I take it you've heard the name Les Ferdinand mentioned too?
