Advantages: Great presenter, quality spin-off merchandising, a children's programme which is educational - blimey!
Disadvantages: annoying theme tune, what is he on about??
Blue’s Clues: Altogether now: “Dun-dun-diddle-dun Blues clues.. Dun-dun-diddle-dun Blues clues..” This programme isn’t on long enough or regularly enough for my liking, or my 3 year old daughter’s for that matter. I believe it is on satellite / digital TV more regularly than on Channel 4, but even so, us lesser mortals only experience the delights of Blues Clues once a week. Usually early on a Saturday morning, this is a children’s TV treat not to be missed. The basic idea of the programme is that whilst watching it, the child has to pick up clues along the way, to solve the mystery. To actually have a point of watching a TV programme is rare these days, particularly when it comes to children’s TV. The presenter has a very rare talent these days and just keeps children’s attention for ages, rather like Jackanory when we were little. This is partly due to his amazing Liverpool accent – I think half the population of children can’t understand a word he is saying, which is why they are so transfixed. Also, he has a sort of catchphrase, with which he does hand-actions to, which is really irritating to us adults, but the kids seem to like it. The programme-makers very cleverly mix the live action with a combination of “real” backgrounds and “cartoon” backgrounds and characters, which I think also adds to the attraction from the child’s point of view. The clues are clearly drawn in the guy’s notepad and they are reminded about them at the end of each programme. The viewer then has a little while to solve the mystery. The programme last week gave the clues to the object as being: wind, a diamond and some string. (Scroll to the bottom for the answer, folks!!!) The spin-off merchandise associated for this programme is of very good quality. I have spent hours (well, minutes, actually), playing with the interactive Blue doggy
in Woolworths, which plays the highly addictive theme tune. You can also get the other minor characters, as well as lunchboxes, stationery…..you know the type of thing! Answer: A kite, of course!
