Advantages: funny, set in Manchester
Disadvantages: characters only beginning to develop
Bob & Rose is the new Comedy/Drama from Russell T Davies, writer of Queer as Folk. The first episode of Bob & Rose appeared on Monday 10th September on ITV - another 5 to go, and it shows at 9pm every Monday night. I really loved Queer as Folk - it was fun, upfront and showed many of the venues in Manchester's Gay Village that we visit. The downside of it was that it made visiting Canal Street a "cool thing to do" so the Gay Village is no longer as gay as it was. The story of Bob and Rose is based around a gay man - Bob (played by Alan Davies) who meets and falls for a straight Woman (Rose). The first episode covered them meeting up, and getting to know a little about each other. It was very strange to see Alan Davies portraying a gay character - he did it quite well, but still felt odd watching him trying to pick up men - suppose I've always thought of him as straight (which he is), so wasn't totally convinced by his portrayal of a gay man. My Mum watched the programme as well - I spoke to her the next day. she hadn't watched Queer as Folk (thank god, far too much for her to cope with in that). She had "quite enjoyed" B&R, but felt the scenario was "unlikely". Pointed outr that it was apparently based on someone that Russell knows, and is therfore at least partly true. Overall opinion - very good, will be interested to see how it develops. Favourite bit- Bob doing 1471 and getting Rose's mobile - she was stood next to him at the time pretending it wasn't her who'd rung!!!
