I think the best word to describe Bottom is vulgar. It was a sitcom that ran for three series in the 1990s, and told the everyday lives of Richie and Eddie, two 30-something bums sharing a rundown flat in Hammersmith.

As a comedy, the show was brilliant. It had multiple slapstick elements and over the top performances from its two writers and actors, Rik Mayalland Ade Edmondson, and you could see a lot of the influences from their stint in Then Young Ones. Mayall's character Richie was neurotic and thought he could always score with the ladies, but was actually repulsive, not washing himself or his clothers for a week and thinking Febreeze would do the job! Eddie as a character was said to be a descendant of Hitler, and was a violent and alcoholic character. The two combined beautifully on screen with their friends Spudgun and Dave Hedgehog.

The characters' names were based on the nicknames that Mayall and Edmondson had for each other at University. Interestingly enough, Mayall would call Edmondson Eddie Monsoon (a play on words on his surname), and in the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, Edmondson's wife Jennifer Saunders plays a character named Edina Monsoon! Small world!

I liked Bottom. Its vulgar humour often insulted a lot of people, but I saw beyond this and realised the slapstick nature and loved it. I understand that this program with its violence and crude nature will offend some, so take that as a warning. Those with a great sense of humour, watch it - it's great. Those who are easily offended - stay away. You'll not be a fan.
