Advantages: One of the best slap stick comedy shows

Disadvantages: Only three series ever recorded

Bottom follows in the same style as the previously successful The Young Ones, as it stars two of the actors from The Young Ones, Rick Mayall and Ade Edmonson as Richie and Eddie. The show ran for three series and numerous stage shows and a fourth series had been developed, but was not taken up by the BBC.

The series follows the adventures of Richie and Eddie, two hopeless, unemployed men that have trouble attracting the attention of the opposite sex. The pair both live in a run down flat in Hammersmith. The main elements of the show involved very violent slap stick comedy, as after a gag one of them would normally end up hitting each other with an item that was nearby. Another element of the show is both of these two characters pursuit of women, with each attempt always ending in disaster.

One of the best episodes that I enjoyed was the one set on Wimbledon common when the pair decide to go camping. As both have to pitch the tent and find their own food from the common. This episode has one of the best endings that you will see in a slap stick comedy series. Another good episode is the series finale, where the pair decide to go to the fair.

With the show it is like marmite, either you love it or you hate it I love it but there are member of my family, like my mother and sister who hate the show. While the show may seem stupid and juvenile, it is this that gives the show its appealing part, as it is laugh out loud comedy. The most obvious comparison is with the Young Ones in which Mayall and Edmonson also started in. While I liked the Young Ones, I believe that Bottom is the superior show, as it is contained within itself and does not go over the top like the Young Ones did.

For this reason I would recommend Bottom, as it is one of the funniest comedies that you will ever see. But if you are offended very easily, then this is not the series for you.

Summary: Comedy at its very best
