Advantages: Really funny, Both actors are great

Disadvantages: Episodes got a little sillier over time

Bottom is my all-time favourite television programme and definitely the funniest programme I have ever seen. It ran for three series of six episodes from 1991 to 1993, then became a live tour which is still going on. Created by and starring Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson, better known to some as Rik the wet poet and Vyvian the insane punk from The Young Ones, Bottom is the story of middle-aged, sweaty men who live together in a flat in Hammersmith for lack of wives and families. Richard "Richie" Richard is the more pathetic of the two, and also the funniest with his over the top campness at times, while Edward "Eddie" Hitler is the slightly more popular one with a drink problem. Episodes usually revolve around the two falling out and beating each other up in hysterical cartoon style violence or finding themselves in an unpleasant situation which they may die at the end of. The name Bottom probably refers to the situation that the men are in at the bottom of the social community, and it's a rude word.
I love every episode of Bottom, but it's the older ones which make me laugh the most, before it became more concerned with sillier plots. Episodes like "Gas" where they kill the gas man who comes round, then try and get rid of him only to find out he's still alive, and "Contest" where Richie falls out with Eddie and doesn't let him watch Miss World even though he really wants to watch it himself show the duo at their very best, while later episodes like "Holy" the Christmas episode involve Eddie's friends Spudgun and Dave Hedgehog. Bottom may not be as recognised internationally as the Young Ones but I really need to see it live! My only disappointment has been with the film "Guest House Paradiso" which was based on Bottom but butchered for a more American market.

Good review of a great show, must say I'm not a fan of the live stuff though. Give me the episodes every time!

Very good review! Perhaps a bit short, but you made some good points and pretty much covered what the show is about. Keep the ops coming! :-)
