Advantages: Very good talent on show, Simon's put downs, acts can surprise in a good way, essential viewing
Disadvantages: The long pause, Judges cliches, Some semi-final entrants shouldn't be there!
What loony is going to get up on stage next?
These thoughts are quite prevalent in my mind when this programme comes on in the evening. Truly there are a real bunch of oddballs wandering about the streets of our land who think they are the best thing since sliced bread (*deliberate cliche as this show loves them!) when actually they're pretty dreadful.
I actually pity the judges at times when some of the acts look for their couple of minutes of fame. From doughnuts in darth vader suits to buffoons doing flower arranging/opera you really don't know what's coming next.
However, there are some truly tremendous talented people out there. Unless you've been encased in a nuclear fallout shelter for the last few months I'm sure you would have heard of Susan Boyle. She's probably the last person in the world you'd expect to have a stunning voice (just look at the judges faces when she waltzed onto the stage for the first time) but when she opened her mouth she pretty much captivated the country and also America!
Add into the mix two outstanding dance acts called Flawless and Diversity, two outstanding young singers and a comedy Greek pair of dancers and you've got a sharp looking final coming up. There's still a couple of heats to go (I'd love to see the guitar player get through) and I will be putting up 'do not disturb signs' on me door on Saturday!
Therein does lie a problem for the longevity of the show though. The reason is for a variety show, the final is innundated with very similar acts. No disrespect to singers who could appear on the X-Factor, they shouldn't be on this show. Seeing as Simon Cowell is holding court, surely he could tell some of these hopefuls to reappear on that song fest rather than BGT. There's hardly any stand up comedy acts that I can think of and there is a danger it could all get a bit samey in the next couple of years.
The judges also seem to be falling into the world of cliche alert. 'Ok, reality check, 'oh you've so nailed that' are just two of the phrases that irritate me immensely. It's not necessary and I wish they'd be a bit more creative. Mind you, you can't knock Simon Cowell and his put downs. His tongue remains as acerbic as ever.
Another irritation is the long pause. Now, when Pop Idol or whatever it was came along it was a novel idea and was permissable. These days it really is outmoded and it was high time it was binned. I'd love Ant and Dec to just say ok 'XXXX' you're going through tonight instead of look at camera, pan to audience, pan to contestants whilst we have to go through this farcical drama. Just tell us the winner! Mind you, it's been going on for ages on several shows now and I wish it'd stop (not likely though!)
You've probably noticed I mentioned two acts who should never have got to the final and this leads nicely to my last gripe. Now, it may be amusing for the judges to put through acts who have no chance of winning but to me all they've done is deny a more deserving act the chance to perform.
This clown in a darth Vader mask doing second rate dancing should have never got through. It seems to me that some acts are purely there so the judges can rip them to shreds in the semi finals. When I think of a really young talented 12 year old drummer who had to make way it makes it all seem very unfair.
Having said all that though I'm a fan of the whole experience. I can't wait for Saturday's final. It would seem that Susan Boyle is a red hot favourite to win but personally I'd love to see either Diversity or Flawless win (trouble is they'll steal each others votes.)
Roll on the final :D
Summary: Great T.V

- 06/06/09 Great review and I agree with you that entrants make the semi's when they are no where near talented enough and great talents go home. |

- 27/05/09 I've only ever watched all the clips from BGT on YouTube - but quite extensively - and I'm addicted. I personally feel Susan Boyle is over-rated, though I preferred her performance in the semi-final. I got way angry though during her audition at the attitude (before she began to sing) of the audience and panel, judging her solely on her appearance....I'm with rosebud2001 re: the blindness of people who feel that one has to be attractive-looking to be talented.
I do get a bit fed up with all the dance acts though, but that's just a personal thing as watching dancing doesn't do much for me, but I love Stavros Flatley and son.
Though I feel Simon Cowell can often be constructive and honest at times to the point of brutality, and I appreciate honesty, to me he comes across as biased on occasions, particularly when he finds a female act attractive to look at.
I think my joint favourites from this season are the singer Simon (young 17-yr-old....forgotten his surname) and Stavros Flatley.
