Advantages: Fab family show, funny auditions.
Disadvantages: Newspaper comments, faking it comments.
Over the past couple of months I, along with several million other people, have been following the hit reality series Britain's Got Talent. I've enjoyed the "tea time" entertainment and have found it immensely satisfying to watch. It's been a greatly amusing to watch the terrible acts that think they are brilliant and equally as amusing and enjoyable to watch the good, talented acts who will clearly go to the final. As well as all the initial entertainment it's but great fun to guess between me and my friends as to who will win and to share our opinions on the people who stood out to us. However it wasn't much of a shock (after all the press attention etc.) to see that Ciao had a topic on Britain's Got Talent - "Has Britain Got Talent?", so I thought I'd offer my opinion ...
A BRIEF SUMMARY
As I think the majority of the people reading and hopefully rating this review will know what Britain's Got Talent is I will offer a short explanation to those who are a little bit lost of not entirely sure.
Britain's Got Talent is a reality television show where people of all ages and with any "talent" can come and perform their talent to the three judges (Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan). If it gets three red X's (buzzers which the judges press if they want the act to stop) the act must stop and leave (although sometimes it isn't very quite)! The three judges with then decided whether the act can go through to the next round. Once the act has been put through to the next round the auditions then continue. Each act is about 2 minutes long. Once this has happened the judges then look at all the different acts and decide which ones will go through into the semi-final. Again through a course of semi-final all of the acts will perform. However, in the semi-finals the public gets to vote for their favourite act. After all the acts have performed and the votes counted the hosts of the show (Ant and Dec) reveal which act had the most votes, this act goes through to the final automatically. The judges then choose their favourite act to go through from the next two most popular. There are several semi-finals (five in the last series just past) and then the chosen acts go through to the final where they will perform again. The public then vote for their favourite, the act with the most votes win and get to perform at the Royal Variety Show in front of the Queen (they also win £100,000).
WHY I WATCH IT
There has been a lot of discussion in the press about Britain's got Talent and quite a lot of people have put their noses up at it rubbish and have rubbished it and those who watch it. However, I disagree - Britain's got Talent isn't trying to be anything to fancy or brilliant it is very simply a Talent show, it has the ups, the downs and the ugliness of all Talent shows. However Britain's Got Talent is great fun! It is enjoyable, amusing to watch, good fun and a great tea-time show! The rubbish acts (the ones with no talent) are good fun to laugh at and wonder why on earth these people are on the show! The acts that are really good and talented are also enjoyable, they are to marvel at and to be astounded by. You can also guess who you think will win with your friends and family. I watch Britain's got Talent because it is a good, (clean) and amusing family show!
THIS YEAR'S FINAL
This year's final was really good fun, it was full of really talented acts and they all deserved to win. I think it was one of the most talented finals that the show has had so far and they all could've won in other shows and I think that is a real triumph, showing how talented the nation is. Here is my opinion on the ten acts that were in the fabulous final this year: 2 Grand - Singing
Two Grand only got into the final through the sympathy and family sweetness vote. They were two singers, grandfather and granddaughter, who had reasonable voices and sang nice family sweet songs. The Grandfather had recently lost his wife and the granddaughter her grandmother, he had said that doing the show had given him a focus and had pulled him out of a low place. They were a good act and sang nicely, they seemed like genuinely nice people and had a soft spot in everyone's heart. They were a good act but couldn't compete with the tremendous amount of talent. I would rate them as 8/10.
Aidan Davies - Dancing
Aidan Davies is an incredibly talented twelve year old. He is a self taught street/hip-hop dancer. He has an amazing collection of moves and fantastic execution. He really knows how to pull off a exceptional performance. He can capture his audience almost instantly and can keep them captured through out his performance. During his audition he put on a really good show, but with the help of some amazing special effects his performance rose from incredibly talented to pulling off a mind blowing performance in the semi-final. However he did rather give away all his tricks before the final and this left his performance a bit same-y. Rated 9/10.
Diversity - Dance Group
Diversity were the winners of this year's Britain's got talent and I'm proud to say that for the first time ever my "I think they will win" prediction was correct. Diversity was an amazing, comical, brilliant, organised and fabulous group of dancers. They produced good fun, well rehearsed flawless dance routines. The twist they put on the classic routine was a good humoured comments, movements and outfits! The dances were entertaining, fun, really good and easy to watch. They were quite distinctive despite a lot of competition and really stuck out. They had a really good fun attitude and their dance routines were outstanding to say the least! They deserved to win and were great candidates and really good sports! Rated 10/10 .
Flawless - Dance Group
Flawless were Diversity's biggest competition as they had been compared as very similar, they were however quite different in the final. Flawless, were as there name suggests Flawless, their moves were stylish, on time and completely fantastic. They were smashing and gave an outstanding performance. They were very good dancers but didn't give the same amount of comedy and humour as Diversity did and this let them down. I also felt that their performance in the semi-final was better than the one in the final. However the final was very enjoyable, good fun, a really well-rehearsed, on-time, smashing performance. It was brilliant and a really good performance. 9/10.
Hollie Steel - Singer
Hollie Steel was the little girl who came on stage during the auditions as a ballerina and the judges faces sunk and the opinion was very low, but when she began to sing they were, as most of the audience astonished. She has a super soprano voice and is incredibly brilliant at singing, in her own words she sounds quite normal when she talks but she sings "dead posh". However her singing however posh was outstanding and won over the nations heart. Her most memorable performance has to be the semi-final when she burst into tears on stage and was told that she wouldn't have another chance to perform, which set off more tears. However she did in the end get her second chance, and sang very well. Then in the final her performance was not as good as in the semi-final I think she picked the wrong song. 9/10.
Julian Smith - Saxophonist
Julian Smith was third in the competition and I think it was very deserved, he created beautiful music with his saxophone. His music was beautiful and I think Amanda cried at least once during his performance. He was incredibly talented and was a real part of the final that made it more of a variety. His music was smooth, perfect, classical and really enjoyable to listen to. He was really passionate about his music and was really desperate to have this chance. This was something that annoyed me slightly. He was so obsessed that he had always nearly made it. He kept saying that he was nearly 40 and was still the man that nearly made it, he said that he really wanted to achieve something and get a better life for his family, which is what most people want. However his music really was outstanding, beautiful and heart warming. I would rate him 9/10.
Shaheen Jafagholi - singer
Twelve year old Shaheen has an outstanding voice, he sings beautifully. Hi voice is strong, but smooth and rich and has a lovely quality. He has a great style of voice and dress, when he sings he entertains everyone and the style of his singing is pop/jazz. For a twelve year old his voice is truly magnificent and I could really see him selling records. In his original audition it looked like his dream wasn't going to happen as he started by singing Valerie however Simon Cowell stopped him and asked him to sing something else, he did and that is how he got to the final. Shaheen gave brilliant consistent performances and was a really good performer. I would rate Shaheen 10/10.
Shaun Smith - Singer
Shaun Smith is a seventeen year old rugby player, from Staffordshire, with a brilliant voice. From the moment I heard Shaun I loved him, I think along with his voice it was the song that he chose in his auditions (Ain't no Sunshine). His voice is rich, and versatile. He sings brilliantly, with a tuneful voice. He is brilliant and loved by all, but you can also see why the judges (particularly Simon) and this is slightly annoying because he has a very sell-able voice and is good looking. I say this is annoying as he is really talented and yet the slurs on the judges only going for talent that will make them/ Simon money affected how people voted I think - he was better than Susan Boyle in my opinion (please don't attack me for saying this) and sung some really hard choices of songs, outstandingly. Shaun seemed like a really nice, down to earth guy who sang really, really well. He has been slightly un-acknowledged and this is quite sad, but I hope he makes an album anyway. He was Great! 10/10
Stavros Flatly - Dance Act
This comical father-son dance act was hilarious. They were funny, good dancers, good performers, brilliant crowd pleaser's and a fabulously funny act. They were competent, friendly, normal, smiley and best mates. The connection between Father and Son was brilliant and they really went well together on stage, they went like bubble and squeak or bangers and mash! Their dance routines were well thought out, well performed and really well rehearsed. Their act was funny (non-crude) and really entertaining. They obviously loved each other and for a family show a family bond couldn't been more right. As they put it "for two little podgy guys" they were brilliant they really go the crowd to life and got everyone on their feet or laughing their socks off!! This duo was brill-O! 10/10
Susan Boyle - Singer
Susan Boyle is a name that was un-heard of at the start Britain's got talent but now everyone has heard of, this has slightly annoyed me and throughout the series whenever anyone has been saying "Susan Boyle is sure to win" or "There is no competition in Britain's Got Talent," I've been very annoyed. I was cross that they weren't giving the other acts a chance. Susan was a good singer, however it was just good there are plenty of people out there who are talented singers, however the reason that everyone was so shocked was the fact they thought that she looked terrible and was a bit batty and that actually everyone was proved wrong. She was a good, if not very good, singer but there plenty of acts out there to rival her and she wasn't amazing. She sang classical music in a powerful voice and did it very well. I also feel a bit sorry for her as she had learning difficulties and I feel that she was taken advantage of by the newspaper's, slightly. I feel sorry that she has had a breakdown now too, although I'm not sure why as she still got a very good record deal (like everyone knew she would!). I would give Susan 9/10.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
There has been three shows of Britain's Got Talent and each one has been better than the last, producing more fabulous talent. Here are my opinions of the previous winners. PAUL POTTS
Paul Potts is a thirty-nine year old tenor singer. He won the first series of Britain's Got Talent back in 2007, with the song Nessun Dorma from Puccini's Turandot. He was brought up from an average background (his father a bus driver, his mother a supermarket cashier) and developed his love of singing as a child. During his audition the crowd was amazed and went wild, his voice was fantastic. Then in the semi-finals he sang Andrew Bocelli's "Con te Partiro", with magnificent gusto. He then went on to sing Nessun Dorma again in the final. He was fantastic and sang brilliantly, storming his way to victory. His voice is powerful, beautiful and really emotional. He obviously sings with his heart, and delivers brilliant, powerful music every time. He seems a brilliant nice, modest guy who truly is down to earth and cares passionately about his music. He was a fantastic performer. He also fought against criticism from the public and the papers as he had attended a Pavarotti master class and had performed in operatic productions. Paul however, explained that the Pavarotti master class had been paid for out of his own savings and he had never received any pay for the operas and that they were amateur.
GEORGE SAMPSON
George, who is soon to be sixteen (born 29th June 1993), was 13 when he first auditioned for Britain's got talent, however did not make it through to the semi-finals. However in 2008 he stormed his way through the auditions with his fun and funky street dance routines. As well as battling against the other contestants George has also battled with a rare disease called Scheuermann's disease, which affects developing bones in children and teenagers and causes curvature of the spine. For the semi-finals he danced to an arrangement of Mint Royale's version of Singing in the Rain. Which saw him come top with the public's vote. It was a hip-hop street dance and was incredibly funky. He is so talented and can dance brilliantly! For the final George danced the same as he had done in the semi final, making this decision only one hour before he was due to go on. Yet again he was effortlessly stylish, slick, cool, funky and proved how talented he was. For this year's show he came back to dance again, and pulled (yet another) amazing routine out of the bag. It was simply outstanding! It was shocking, eye-catching, audience pleasing, great fun, amazing, cool, slick and professional as well as being performed at an incredibly high standard, above that of many big celebrities or dancers. George was a great guy and made thousands of girls all across the nation fall in love with him, through his cuteness, incredible dancing skills and really nice personality. Go George!
IS IT A VARIETY SHOW?
This is a question that a lot of people wonder about it and has been questioned. The show is asking for any talent what so ever and they will be performed at the Variety Performance in front of the queen. So why, ask many people, do the majority of acts all be the same? Dancers or Singers! Admittedly the past three winners have been just dancers and singers however they are very different in themselves. Paul Potts sang classical opera, George Sampson was a single street dancer and Diversity was a large dance group who told a comical story through their performances. There also was a saxophonist in third place in this year's show (Julian Smith) so I do believe that Britain's got talent is a show representing all different kinds of people with many different talents.
DO WE NEED MORE TALENT SHOW PRODIGIES?
Since the arrival of Pop Idol in 2001, Popstars the rivals in 2002, Fame Academy in 2003 and X-factor in 2004 the nation has been over run with talent show winners and runners up. Some who have risen and made a successful career for themselves and others who have fallen flat of the record, released one or two songs and then vanished. We have become a nation over run with pop stars and divas. There are so many of the winners (with one winner from each show nearly every year), they are often forgotten almost as soon as they win. . Rarely does a talent show winner become a success (to name a few Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson and Will Young). So, does this baby talent show (having only started in 2007) need to be adding to the masses of traditionally found stars and the masses of ones from other reality shows?
I feel that Britain's Got Talent is very different to the masses of reality shows as the acts on X-factor, Pop Idol and other shows are all singers where as Britain's got Talent really shows a variety of talent and they don't all go on to release the same type of pop record. They can do dance shows (George Sampson, Diversity), Musical shows, Music video backing/dancing, Theatre work etc. There are many different varieties of talent and they all can find a unique and different place in the music industry (instead of repeating the same mould). However, I do think that Britain's Got Talent does need to keep producing a variety of varied, interesting and unusual acts to make sure it does live up to the fact that it is feeding the Variety Show.
GOOD
Variety of acts.
Feel Good Feel.
Family Show.
Auditions are Hilarious.
Adds something different to the mounds of Pop star talent shows.
Is open to all ages.
BAD
Simon Cowell !!!
Can be dictated by the press's opinion/who the judges think would be the most sell-able.
Some boring acts at the audition.
=CONCLUSION
Britain's Got Talent is a family, feel-good show. It is entertaining, funny and has some really talented stars. The judges give good, fair advice and Amanda Holden's niceness balance's out some of Simon Cowell's meanness. The auditions are entertaining, funny and a real laugh. The star's of this year were incredibly talented and the final was incredibly close! It is often criticised by some of the paper's and there are rumours and talk of the winner being the one the judges think is most saleable, not the most talent, which is annoying. However i think Britain's Got Talent is an amazing show and think that is definitely worth watching.
Thanks for Reading,
Ratty

- 09/08/09 It's quite disturbing when we see people who think they're talented and are clearly deluded with heads in the clouds!! |
