Advantages: Always interesting to see what was going to happen next
Disadvantages: Later stories were a bit boring, hence it finishing production in 2003
Who can forget Brookside, the first soap ever shown on Channel 4. This programme was set on a Liverpool housing estate, and followed all of it's residents.
The show was always hard hitting, covering almost every story that you can think of. Some examples from the top of my head include murder, rape, sieges, shootings, incest, affairs, domestic abuse, helicopter crashes and explosions. Who would ever want to live on such an estate with all of these nasty things going on. The close would have surely been on the news all of the time!
The hardest hitting story would have to be the Jordache domestic abuse story, in about 1993. Mandy Jordache and her two daughters, Beth and Rachel were housed on Brookside Close for their safety after their dad, Trevor abused them. Trevor eventually tracked them down, wormed his way back into Mandy's life, and subsequently starts beating her up again. The worst thing of all was him abusing their youngest daughter, Rachel. This was the final straw for Mandy and Beth, and they plotted to kill him by putting poison in his food. He finds them doing this though and attacks them both, only for Mandy to stab him in the back. This leads to them famously burying him under the patio, leading to a very gripping story.
Brookside's viewers declined in the new millenium, and eventually the programme ceased production in late 2003. It will always be remembered by it's many fans though.
Summary: One of Channel 4's greatest programmes
