Advantages: used to be the best soap on TV
Disadvantages: see text
I was an avid brookie fan when it first came out - I'd cancell nights out, refuse to answer the phone and even split up with one hapless spotty youth because he called round when Brookie was on. I rember the good old days when this was a realistic, well written, gritty, well acted, produced and non soapy kind of soap! I can rember the antics of those loveable scallies Barry and Terry - I even shed a tear with Sheila Grant when Barry left! How Barry became a psychotic killer I'm not too sure. I cried for poor Sheila when her Damien was killed and the portrayal of the aftermath of her rape was done so sympathetically, well written and acted. I did alot of crying for poor old Sheila but in the end she found happieness in the arms of Billy Corkhill. Do you rember when the Corkhills were Billy and Doreen and the most miserable teenagers in the whole world - Rod (soon to be Rod the plod) and our Tracey! Now the Corkhills are poor old Jaqui and Jimmy. I really had some good times with this soap ( this is sounding abit sad , I did have a life honest!!!) But in recent times ie the last 18 months or so this soap has just lost it! Its not real any more the story lines are just too far fetched! Jaqui Dixon, would Max and Sushannah really have asked thier neighbour to be a surrogate?? Come on! Talking about Max and Sushannah , funny how Susannah was portrayed as a shunned wife who was just pathetic sponging of Max now she's a top buisness woman!! Would Max really have had an affair that span decades - he'd never have cheated on Patricia! Would a lord of the manor really have wanted to marry Jaqui rent a gob Dixon?? Lindsey Corkhill, sorry but how did this woman who hopped from one bed to another become a lesbian ( I have nothing against lesbians)? I think this was just a cheap way to grab a few more viewers! Its just out of charactor. Sinbad and the child abuse, please did you have to stoop
that low Channel 4 , to grab more viewers? Bev, who re appeared destitute with Josh in care is now the owner of a bar! Ok maybe this isnt far fetched! I could rant for ages, but this soap used to be really good, but now its just about trying to grab viewers and therefore advertising revenue. I watch it once in a blue moon now and I dont think i'm missing much not like the old days!!

- 25/05/01 I wholeheartedly agree with your recent opinion of Brookie. It also used to be my favourite all-time soap, but now I'm barely interested enough to summon up the energy to watch it! It's a real shame because it once was so gritty & true-to-life.
I remember the "Damon & Debbie" spin-off. It was a lot better than the recent spin-off stories of gangsters & the like! Sometimes, for a bit of nostalgia, I watch the odd old repeat on the digital channel "Living". Those were definitely the better Brookie days!! |

- 25/03/01 I must admit I am a fan but in the last few years it has gone downhill, although I still dont miss an episode! Sad eh? |

- 07/09/00 All the stuff with Lindsay as a gangster was pretty far-fetched too. I've been watching the older ones on satellite and have to agree they were better. |
