Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Advantages: Great characters, great songs
Disadvantages: Some filler episodes, only 7 seaons
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an American TV Show about a young girl whose destiny is to fight vampires, demons and whatever else is thrown at her.
It's funny, quirky, dark at times and AMAZING. It's my favourite TV show of all time.
The creator, Joss Whedon, is a legend, he writes amazing stories about strong women (see his other tv shows). He's witty, sarcastic, and clever and it shows in his writing.
Buffy was first released as a Movie in 1992, it was a bit of a flop but it's what started my Buffy obsession. When the series was released in 1997, I wasn't keen. It was different from the film, the vampires couldn't fly, the girl playing Buffy was different, and I thought I was never, ever going to like it.
I grew to LOVE it. I won't lie, season one isn't great but you need to watch it to understand Buffy, and Angel and the other characters. My favourite season is probably season two, the last episodes in that - Becoming Part 1 & 2 are my all-time favourite and make me cry every single time I watch them haha! Some other episodes I love are Dopplegangland (season three) - funniest episode by far. Earshot and The Prom from season three are also some of my favourites. Pangs from season four is really funny. The scariest episode is probably Hush in season four, eek don't watch that on your own.
My least favourite episodes are probably the Zeppo, a fair few from season one and Superstar and Restless from season four.
I want to give a special mention to the epic episode that is "Once more with feeling" - a musical episode! It's quite bizarre really but in a really cool way. You'll be surprised by how good some of these are at singing and how bad...mentioning no names (Willow!)
Buffy is set in Sunnydale in California. The story revolves around Buffy Summers, a teenage girl who is also a Vampire Slayer -"one girl in every generation is chosen, she alone must fight the vampires, demons and forces of darkness, she is the Slayer" Buffy doesn't do it alone though, Buffy is unlike any slayer that's ever been. She has her Watcher Rupert Giles (all slayers have Watchers) he's a stuffy British Librarian and at first he and Buffy have this very tetchy relationship because they don't understand each other but it's great to watch their relationship develop over the years.
Willow is Buffys best friend, she's a geek but is brave and strong and we love her.
Xander is Buffys boy best friend, he's also a bit of a geek but not in the smart way that Willow is. He's also brave, in a bit of a dorky way, he's totally loyal, he'd do anything to protect his friends.
Angel - well I don't want to really tell you much about Angel because it'll ruin the first series but he's a hottie (in Buffys words).
Giles - Buffy's watcher, as I said, he's stuffy, a Librarian and British. His character really develops and grows over the years.
Cordelia - She's on of the most popular girls in school but somehow ends up being on the Scooby Gang and shows herself to be very brave and courageous, if a little shallow and flaky.
There are lots more characters that come and go over the years but I don't really want to spoil anyting about telling you about them. These are the main ones from season one though.
You might think Buffy is a kids TV show and you might be right to some extent but as the years pass, the characters grow with it and it definitely becomes a young adult show by the end, some things are definitely not suitable for children. See above mentioned Hush!
I'm 30 (oh god am I really 30? Erm sorry about that) yes so I'm 30 and I still LOVE Buffy, I've just started watching it again on Lovefilm and although there are some "filler" episodes I do skip as they're daft and don't add much to the overall story, I still love it.
Another point I should mention, is Buffy has an awesome soundtrack, I at one point had all the CD's but I must've sold them because I can't find them now. Might look at getting them off iTunes because they are some great songs in it, the first episode of season two has a great song by Ciabo Matto called Sugar Water, amazing, have a listen. A fictitious group in the show called Dingoes Ate My Baby are awesome, the band that plays those songs is really called Four Star Mary, I saw these live years ago, they are really good. Pain has got to be my favourite song from them.
Buffy has a spin off show called Angel (I will be writing a review on this at some point) It's nearly as good as Buffy but not quite there, probably because Buffy isn't in it!
I was very sad when Buffy ended after seven amazing, emotional rollercoaster seasons, I still hope one day they might do a film or something but I won't hold my breath....
Be prepared to laugh a lot, cry a lot and really love these characters.
I hope you found my review useful.
Summary: A great tv show, watch it!
