Advantages: Classic and cult
Disadvantages: Cheap and tacky (but in an endearing and legendary way!)
Okay everyone. Get a wooden spoon, some glue and a few pipecleaners of varying colour. Use an old baked bean tin and a paper plate, and there you have it: your very own children's TV programme. Oh, and you'll need an old washing up bottle for the rocket!
Button Moon was my brother's favourite TV programme when we were kids, growing up, and it was very simple as well. Each episode followed Mr Spoon, as he flew in his rocket moon to the famous theme tune: 'We're off to Button Moon, we'll follow Mr Spoon, Button Moon, Button Moon!'
Mr Spoon was made from a wooden spoon, the moon was indeed a button, and other household bits and bobs were used to make the rest of the set. The adventures of Mr Spoon weren't particularly exciting, but the concept was intriguing for kids and it kept us transfixed. Even now as an adult, I remember it more vividly than many other programmes from when I was very young, and that surely is testament to a good programme.
Button Moon isn't repeated at the moment. If and when this does happen, it is such a cult TV programme that it is well worth giving a go with your kids. The simplicity of it is amazing, and the cheesy and tacky 80s style of it will make you smile and shake your head in amazement at just how 'bad' (but great) it really is. Highly recommended!
Summary: An all time favourite kids' TV programme
