CAPTAIN SCARLET and The Mysterons.
=================================
~ INTRODUCTION ~
*************************
Here we are again with another Gerry Anderson Brain child.
Captain Scarlet followed hot on the heels of Gerry's global success of Thunderbirds and he didn't disappoint.
2065
*******
Captain Scarlet and Captain Black are on Mars when Capt Black, against Scarlets wishes fires upon a Martain base and destroys it.
The Martains or Mysterons immediately declare war on Earth.
Scarlet manages to escape but the Mysterons kill Capt Black and resurrect a duplicate of him to do their bidding.
He will be Scarlets nemesis for the rest of the series.
Scarlet is later killed by the Mysterons and his duplicate erected to work further sabotage but in an accident the duplicate is itself killed.
But then something strange happens, the duplicate comes back to life but with all of Capt Scarlets memories, traits and loyalties and free from Mysteron control.
And he now has the ability to renew himself if he is injured or killed making him indestructible, as in the words of the opening title song.
MYSTERONS:
******************
The Mysterons are never seen, ever, they are portrayed as disembodied voices and have strange eye shaped roving lights that can take over a person or thing once the original has been destroyed.
SPECTRUM:
****************
Spectrum is a float sky base and has an eclectic collection of other agents working alongside Scarlet to keep the Earth safe from Mysteron attacks.
It is headed by Colonel White who has other agents under him such as Capt Blue, lieutenant green, capt grey etc...
They would use call signs like;
S.I.G Spectrum Is Green, everything being OK
S.I.R Spectrum Is Red, everything is not good.
The bas would be protected by its 'Angels' a crew of female pilots tasked with meeting most attacks on the base.
Opinions
************
Filmed in 'Supermarionation' was, in its day, the Blu Ray or HD of todays Television. It was very colourful, had models that you could buy, stories that where very easy to follow and clearly defined goodies and baddies.
The lip sink of the puppets mouths to words was funny at times and the zooming in of the hands to peoples real hands always raised a smile.
It was a childs program but with the revamp and a 21st century digital version coming out the later version had a more crisp and modern edge to it.
Captain Scarlet was a true hero and even had a resemblance to Roger Moore but sounded very much like Cary Grant. This is a series worth revisiting but probably kiddies today would prefer the cartoon type version.
32 episodes of wonderful nostalgia that will really take you back to proper kids TV.
Highly recommended.
Greg.
