Advantages: characters, storylines.
Disadvantages: they're moving it to Wales. Characters only have one personality.
I've been watching Casualty for what feels like forever. Years and years and years! Still if I miss an episode I have to watch it on catch up before I even think about the next one.
It's based in the A & E department of Holby City Hospital, yet very rarely do the two join together. It was first aired back in 1986 and lasts for about 50 minutes every Saturday. However if there is a particular big storyline they may also put in on on a Sunday as well.
Each week features a new selection of sick people being wheeled or stumbling into the emergency areas reception. Featuring diffferent incidents you usually get to see how at least one set of characters got their injuries. Most of the time you can tell straight away what's going to happen.
Kid on a skateboard loses control whilst going down a flight of steps with railings on either side. Probably going to end up lodged into them.
Boiling pan of water, young child. Scolding face etc.
Along with the patients you also get an insight to that of the staff. Recently Casualty has been taking more of interest in showing us the different sides of the nurses and doctors. Revealing some of their personal life other than the drinks after work scenario they always seem to do.
One thing the writers do is give them a certain personality and they stick to it. There's a character called Alice who is just constantly wanting to be good and doesn't have much of a backbone. Nothing changes with her. Same as another guy called Jay who likes the ladies. Tess-motherly and a bit nosey. Charlie-interfereing etc.
Current ongoing storylines between the staff are Ruth and Jay. So obviously like eachother but can't get their act together. Nick Jordan, finding out he doesn't have long to live because of a brain tumour. Big Mac trying to cope and deal with the kids on a rough estate and Jess, a Mum wanting to get her children back home after her husband took them away from her.
So a lot to get involved with.
This hospital based drama is set in Bristol but the swines who make it are moving it to Wales. So no more watching the programme and going I know that place for me. Recently the park near my house made an appearance which got me a bit excited (small things please small minds.) although it was shown as a place for drug users which dampened it a bit.
Overall this is a great Saturday night filler. Lots of blood and sick appears, which in our houses produces a lot of eugh's despite how often we've seen in on the programme.
This could put you off but don't let it! They also have guest appearances occassionally. Pauline Quirk and Norman Wisdom have shown their faces from time to time.
A thoroughly enjoyable 50 minutes on BBC 1 usually on at about 8:30pm but it always depends on what their TV line up is for that night.

- 11/07/09 Wales is only across the severn bridge as it's produced in Bristol, so perhaps they'll become part of torchwood - hey that would be a great tv programme wouldn't it with them bringing everyone back to life every week! Good review, don't watch casualty much these days, but was well into it years ago. |

- 05/07/09 It's pretty amazing that this has lasted more than twenty years on the same formula. I can't see the appeal with hospital drama - how depressing! |
