Mister Maker - Cbeebies....
Mister Maker is a programme that is shown on the Cbeebies channel (614 sky or 71 digibox). It is repeated twice a day and is shown pretty much 7 days a week, meaning we have seen this show a lot. The show, as with all programmes shown on the Cbeebies channel, is aimed at small children of pre-school age and just over meaning it is watched by children from 0 to 4.
The show is, as its name would suggest, about a man who makes different things and a lot of it is very simple to make using things that one would have around the home. Mister Maker himself is a 20 something year old man who is a little bit wacky and slightly annoying.
The set of the show is all very brightly coloured and appealing to the younger child for this reason. I have made a couple of the things shown on the programme with Jack and have found them easy to do as the instructions are easy to follow and to remember. Some things on the show however I do feel are pretty naff for example it was shown how to make a set of pan pipes out of drinking straws and corrugated cardboard. This was easy to make and Mister Maker made the pan pipes in "under a minute" which is a section of the show where he is up against the clock to make the item. The pan pipes certainly looked good as they were made with multi-coloured straws but really didn't have any sort of sound to them and in my view were useless.
There is a section on the show called the "shapes" where four different people are dressed up in different coloured shape outfits such as a triangle, square, circle and rectangle. They dance around and sing a little song before a shape is chosen and a picture is made using that specified shape. This bit makes Jack laugh and dance along with the shapes and he really enjoys this section of the show.
The show show is fasted paced and like Mister Maker himself, a little wacky. This is why I guess Jack likes it so much and when it is on he is quite for the full 10-15 minutes. Personally I find both the presenter and the show rather irritating and compared to Art Attack with Neil Beaucannon (a show that I grew up watching) I don't think it is in the same league.
I do however appreciate that the items made need to be simple and easy to do but a lot of the items are utter rubbish. However because it is not a show which is aimed at me my opinion of it is really not important it is what Jack thinks of it, and he really likes it. He enjoyed it when we made the monster eyes (out of pipe cleaners and muffin cases) it was simple yet fun and this is basically what the show is all about.
So to conclude I would say that although the show is not my cup of tea it really does get the attention of the audience it is trying to which is small children. Jack loves it and therefore i can give the show nothing less than a four star rating and a recommendation.
I do hope this has been of some help/interest to you. Thanks for taking the time to read.
Summary: good show for pre-schoolers
