Advantages: It's good waiting to see who will 'crack'
Disadvantages: Can get boring, especially during the live shows on E4
So the second series of Watching A Load Of D-List Has-beens Being ?Real People?-sorry, Celebrity Big Brother-has finally started. There has been much speculation as to who of our nation?s finest (yeah, right) would be partaking in this year?s challenge. Notably, it?s all for charity, so you?ve got to give it some credit. ---------------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ------------------------- We all know how last year?s show turned out. To be honest, I wasn?t a great fan, but it?s amazing how some of the housemates? careers were revamped: Keith Duffy?s career as a pop star-originally in Boyzone, one of Britain?s best-loved boybands-was well and truly over, yet he came up trumps after Celebrity BB, landing himself a part in Coronation Street. Similarly, Claire Sweeney was just another soap actress, in the struggling Brookside. Since Celebrity BB, she has starred as the lead role in the West-End musical Chicago, released an album, and has appeared on many a TV event, as well as being the face of numerous ad campaigns. Then again, whilst last year?s series was a success for some, Vanessa Feltz came out of the house even more disliked than she already was. So it?s a bit of a gamble for them really. ---------------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ------------------------- I believe that this time around will be a hell of a lot more interesting, as the people Channel 4 have chosen is such as mixed bag: For the girls, there?s ex-Page 3 model-turned doting mother Melinda Messenger, comedienne Sue Perkins (half of the duo Mel and Sue), and middle-aged ex-morning TV presenter Anne Diamond. For the boys, there?s ex-Family Fortunes presenter Les Dennis, musician/actor Goldie, and ex-heart throb from Take That, Mark Owen. Interestingly, there are 4 of them who are ex-somethings. Hmm. However, although none of them are massive stars, they seem like an ok bunch. It?s a bit early
to make any predictions as to who?ll win, but I?ll say that Mark Owen is a safe bet at the moment, as all the old Take That fans still hold a torch for him- the screams for him when he entered the house last night were massive. ---------------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ------------------------- Here are my opinions of all the different housemates: * Melinda Messenger * I admire Melinda in a way, as she?s manage to shed her page-3 image, and has transformed herself into a much more demure character. This is probably because she?s a mother now. Many people have said that she?ll be a mother-figure in the house, and that she?ll be the one cooking for everyone and helping people out. This may be true, as she?s probably eager to demonstrate that she?s not just a dumb bimbo. However, I feel that Melinda?s ?cheekiness? is still present, and I think that she?s a useful addition to the house. From first impressions, she seems bubbly, kind, and willing to meet new people and form relationships with them. If she lives up to these first impressions, then she will be a very popular character, not only with her fellow housemates, but with the viewers at home too. * Sue Perkins * I?m not really familiar with Sue, but she does seem like a funny and witty woman. One question is will she be able to maintain her reputation as a successful comedienne, without the aid of her partner Mel? That remains to be seen, but she does seem well-balanced and interesting, and should bring some light-heartedness to the house in times when everyone?s a bit down, like when people are up for eviction, etc. * Anne Diamond * I don?t really know much about her, as it was before my time when she was on the TV, but I think that Anne is going to prove to be quite a handful. She seems quite high-maintenance and uppity, which may make her unpopular with her housemates. I can see her becoming the next Van
essa, i.e. a disaster story-it really doesn?t seem like she will win. I?ll even go as far to say that she will be the first one out, as she?ll probably annoy everyone! I?ve got nothing against her, but I?ve heard from older people who were around when she was a well-known presenter that she?s a bit full of herself and arrogant. Only time will tell? * Les Dennis * If I was Les, I wouldn?t leave my cheating wife alone and free to go off with someone for 10 days! Enough of the bitching. Like Sue, I think Les will bring some light-heartedness to the house, However, as he always comes across as such a jolly character, it will be interesting to see if he cracks under the pressure. I also think that Les is one of the most likely to be offered some good TV work if he does well in the house. Could this be Les?s incentive for taking part? After all, the work has dried up for him over the last few years, after hosting Family Fortunes for ages. Nonetheless, I?m quite looking forward to seeing how Les holds up in this challenge, and I think he?s going to do reasonably well at least. * Goldie * Having recently appeared as the devil-some Angel in Eastenders, Goldie could be hot property once this is over. Contrasting his evil character in the soap, he seems like a likeable person. However, I have a feeling he may have problems integrating with the others, as his background and lifestyle is very different to theirs. Initially, he seemed quite reserved and enigmatic, but he may decide to open up more when he feels more at ease with his housemates. As for his role in the house, I?m not too sure- he doesn?t really seem like the type to spend hours slaving over a cooker, but he doesn?t seem lazy either. He?s rather mysterious, which makes good viewing for us! * Mark Owen * Once part of one of Britain?s biggest bands ever, Mark Owen will be very popular with all the late-teen/twenty-something females, who liked him
when he was in Take That. Like me! He seems like a very nice and considerate person, but I fear that the others won?t take him seriously, as he?s still quite young and was part of a boyband. On the other hand, they could warm to him. As he?s the baby of the house, the more dominant females will probably have the instinct to mother him- particularly Melinda, who I feel will hit it off with Mark. Rumours are rife that Take That are set to reform in the near future. If Mark does well in this, or even goes on to win like I?ve predicted, perhaps he?ll be offered a record deal and won?t need to? ---------------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ------------------------- So, there you have it. Although it?s only for 10 days, Celebrity BB will probably prove to be a massive hit. As Big Brother in general has gotten increasingly popular after BB 3 this year, the viewing figures for this will probably be sky-high. I look forward to seeing who wins, and who comes out the loser of the series! It?s a shame that we as the viewing public think like that, but remember how excited everyone was last year when Vanessa lost it?! I hope you?ve enjoyed my op, and I hope that you enjoy this programme. And by the way, remember to vote as much as possible, ?cos it?s all for charidee!!

- 22/11/02 I'm a Sue man myself, although I think having Anne Diamond in there is a stroke of genius, and I agree that she's likely to do a Vanessa!! |
|
- 22/11/02 I don't think Les Dennis should leave his wife for 2 days let alone 10! |
|
- 21/11/02 I'm not sufficiently interested in any of the celebs in it to bother watching. No doubt I'd get hooked if I did see it though - as I did with I'm a Celebrity... Good review though. |
