Charlie wipes the news clean (Charlie Brooker's Newswipe)
Member Name: mousedadrummer
Advantages: Very funny and interesting Disadvantages: Second to last episode a disspointment Charlie Brooker is a critic, tv presenter and writer whos unique sense of humour has brought him many fans. Brooker's new show, Newswipe is a kind of spin off from his longer running show "Screenwipe" which is a show all about televsion, from reviews of programs, to how tv is made and the laws and people involved. Charlie presents it with his own style of sarcasm and humour. Newsipe follows a similar format, however it concentrates solely on news programs. I was broadcast on BBC Four for six half hour episodes in March and April of this year. Brooker discusses the workings of the news programs and how news has changed to become more commercial in recent years with the use of flashy graphics, friendly faced presenters and viewer generated material. Charlie also takes an in depth look at recent news sotries including the death of Jade Goody, the credit crunch and the snow in early 2009. He makes you realise how much of the news is distorted and presented in a way that may not be morally right, or useful to the viewer and the program really does make you think about it, as well as being entertaining and very funny at the same time. The only dissapointment of the series was the second to last episode (orginally intended to be the final episode), which was simply a "best of" feauting clips from previous shows. This would be good for a series which had more episodes, but for a series with only 5 shows to pick best bits from it was a bit dissapointing. Overall, a great show for fans of Charlies work, but also and interesting look into how news programs work. Summary: Charlie Brooker is right about everything! |
