Advantages: can be quite funny especially when slagging of celebs
Disadvantages: sketches and singing dull, lots of unnecessary swearing!
Charlotte Church first shot to fame as a young Welsh classical singer. In recent years however her image has changed dramatically. She is now married to Welsh rugby player Gavin Henson and has a couple of kids too. She has practically given up singing professionally and is now more interested on a appearing on television.
In September 2006 she hosted the first episode of her chat show 'the charlotte church show,' on channel four on a Friday evening for fifty minutes, most thought it was deemed for failure as she appeared quite nervous when talking to guests, would swear unnecessarily and show off way too much; which was annoying to say the least and did nothing for her image at the that time! Surprisingly however, there have been three series of the show and it has attracted viewing figures of up to 2,500,000 people at a time, quite an achievement.
The show begins by charlotte singing a made up song which relates to events which have taken place in the past week, it is supposed to be funny, but is actually quite cringe worthy! The majority of the show is taken up by her chatting with celebrities. At this point you're probably thinking I'm going to mention the 'Z Listers' which have appeared on the show, but I'm actually very surprised at some of the guests she has managed to attract, some are real Hollywood 'A Listers'! To name a few, Patsy Kensit, Will Smith, Liza Minelli, Gwen Stefani, Avril Lavigne, Katie Price (Jordan) twice, Jonathan Ross, Ricky Hatton and funny man James Corden.
In addition to chatting to the guests, of whom there are usually two or three per episode, she usually does a hidden camera stunt. I've seen the show a few times, but one which sticks in my mind quite vividly was when she managed to convince some soldiers that she was a soldier too, dressed up as a male squaddy. She was marching with them on the parade square for about 3 minutes before revealing that she was actually Charlotte Church! This was probably the best one she did of these because they're usually quite dull.
The show normally concludes by her singing a proper song for the audience or doing a duet with one of the guests in the studio; probably the best part of the show because you forget that she is actually a good singer.
Overall it is a pretty decent show and the fact that she is unlike any other chat show host makes it all the more entertaining; especially as she spends half the time slagging off other celebrities.
Thanks for reading, feel free to comment.
Summary: a light hearted entertainment show

- 20/03/09 I dipped my toe in the water when this first started but it's no good - she was sooo wooden and it grated on me! Think she should stick to singing. Must admit I couldn't bear to watch the later series - maybe she has improved! |
