Advantages: charity
Disadvantages: 'live'
Children In Need is an annual event that comes around far too quickly for my liking. The basic concept of the show is an evening of 'entertainment' interspersed with appeals for money. Throughout the day children will have mufti days at school and shave their heads all in the name of charity.
I'm sure Children in Need does a huge amount of good across the country every year and they've managed to get a load of chavs out of poverty. However, as entertainment it truly is the dirtiest skidmark on the sleeve of the BBC. How can they possibly churn out the same old rubbish year on year?
For hours on end one Friday every November this rubbish comes on. The BBC enlists of the help of the one called 'Wogan' and every z-list celebrity that hasn't quite left the building on that evening. That means getting so called celebs to do something different and 'hilarious'. The worst thing I have ever seen on Children In Need was The Holby City cast singing 'Like a Virgin' - honestly, it was the worst thing that has ever been shown on TV since John Logie Baird's first broadcast.
Then there is the endless 'stories' that are repeated every fifteen minutes that show kids in wheelchairs and sleeping on the streets sniffing glue. Why do we have to pay for these things to be sorted? Leave it to the charities and let me watch 'Have I Got News For You' without having to miss it for a week!
Car crash telly it certainly is, especially when they go out to the regions and see what they are up to. In the south you get Sally Taylor and the South Today team usually hanging around Southampton talking to fools in baths of baked beans. Is this what I pay my license fee for?
I give money to charity when I can, but this kind of force-feeding, arm-twisting nonsense is so annoying. Then there's Pudsey - a yellow bear that never talks - at least Blobby used to shout stuff!
Oh yes, and then there is the charity single. Children In Need have unleashed some of the worst charity songs upon the unsuspecting British public for many years now. Shane Richie, S Club Seven, Will Young, Lee Mead and Martine McCutcheon to name but a few have all sung new songs for Children In Need. Need I say more?
As I said earlier, I'm sure Children In Need has changed the lives of many young chavvy urchins. Its just a shame that the flagship channel of the BBC is given over to this embarrassing spectacle every year. I'm bound to get lots of comments on this bemoaning my stance on Children In Need, but I really am just talking about the 'entertainment' side of things which there is very little of.
Summary: Awful waste
