Advantages: Make a difference to the lives of impoverished children in the UK, and have fun doing it

Disadvantages: It's a shame that UK charities helping children overseas don't get any grants from this

For many years now, the BBC has broadcast annually the Children In Need campaign. We are always being encouraged to start our own fund raising activities, in order to raise money for the mosty needy children across the UK. Children who live in the most poverty stricken areas, children who have been abused and neglected, and children who have suffered due to disabilities or disorders. Every year, the entire country comes together in strength, to show our support for these children in need - the next generation who deserve the right to the same basic priviledges in life as the rest of us have.

No other campaign as been able to do so much for hundreds of our charities, and on such a grand scale. The BBC's Children In Need campaign is totally remarkable, both in the effort put into it by everyone, and by what it accomplishes. People up and down the country all make a special effort to raise much needed funds for the children of the nation, and at the same time have fun doing it too. Wacky fund raising activities such as bungee-jumping, bathing in a bath of baked beans and even shaving a much-loved beard off, are just some things that people did last year. Famous pop stars and bands come into the BBC's Children In Need studios, and provide their services for free, while television programmes and soaps cross-over into comical special episodes. This all encourages the viewers to tune in and most importantly to DONATE by calling the local-rate number!

Last year over £20 MILLION was raised solely by the genorosity and kind heartedness of the public, those of us who DO want to make a difference to the lives of the nation's most remarkable children. And it's not just limited to those who have credit cards and money, people on low incomes are also encouraged to donate whatever they can, because as the saying goes, "Every penny counts" - and indeed it does. Last year over £9.3 million was spent on improving the lives of children in
poverty across the country, and £5.7 million helped charities brighten the lives of children suffering illness and abuse, such as the Make A Wish Foundation. In the past, people always congratulated the excellent work that charities do, but never got around to actually donating or raising any money for them. But the BBC's Children In Need campaign represents all these major children's charities, and provides and easy and fun way for us to help them continue the fantastic work they do.

I encourage everybody to support Children In Need this year, either by fund raising or donating any money they have spare to this worthy cause (cash in your dooyoo points!). See the official website for details of how you can help - http://www.bbc.co.uk/cin

And don't forget to tune into the programme this coming Friday 17th November on BBC ONE. Remember, only YOUR support can make this whole nation-wide campaign a success. Thank you.

All I can say as a fundraiser is...I wish I had thought of it first!

Great review! I totally agree with you about giving money to children oversees. I think CIN have done this in the past though. I also enjoyed CIN this year.
