WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
This BBC kids show has been running for over twenty years, and features Barry and Paul Chuckle, two brothers who gets themselves into all sorts of slapstick scenarios when working on a particular job together.
IS IT ANY GOOD:
It's mind-blowing to think these two guys are still going strong, and good on them! The show is a very simple, basic one, but kids seem to love it (I know I used to).
At the heart of its success comes the way children find it fun to see adults make lots of clumsy mistakes; perhaps on some level they feel encouraged with their own inadequacies, and relieved it's not only them that can make a fool of themselves? Whatever, the reason, Slapstick comedy has always been popular, and there's a Laurel and Hardy vibe about this show.
Musically, and sound effects wise, the show is very stimulating - I guess the two less than modelesque brothers aren't exactly visually alluring, so they make it up with the auditory angle, including the cath-phrase "to me, to you".
Most episodes see the brothers on a job, such as window cleaning, and messing it up (falling off the ladder, breaking the window etc). The weird thing is, there have now been 300 episodes of the show, all pretty much the same, and yet it just keeps on coming!
Some of the more recent episodes are more surreal and imaginative, like an episode where the brothers are babysitting, and the boy gets out of the bed, leaving his football in the bed, leading the brothers to believe his head has fallen off. Whilst a slightly different storyline, it's still the same slapstick, over the top humour.
IF YOU LIKED IT:
Kids who can handle black and white may well benefit from seeing a bit of Laurel and Hardy, and perhaps even Charlie Chaplin, all great slapstick artists.
IN CONCLUSION:
Twenty years of a two man slapstick show and still going strong, the Chuckle Brothers is a bit of fun that somehow keeps kids entertained.
Summary: watch it!

- 17/02/09 Priceless! My 4 year old caught them on tv a few weeks ago, but proceeded to pick up the remote control and turn the tv over. I used to love watching them though. Good review. Carol x |
