Advantages: Classic comedy

Many moons ago, The Chuckle Brothers burst onto our screens and brought with them one of the most iconic phrases in comedy. 'To Me To You' cannot be said without their cheeky faces popping into your head. It has to be said that they have had real staying power and are still a permanent fixture on BBC children's television.

The Chuckle Brothers hark back to an era of comedy long gone. Its Les Dawson, its Benny Hill, its Freddie Starr and then it's a bit of Russ Abbott and Cannon and Ball too. Its comedy that is obviously 'old school' in every sense of the word. Theres no irony or knowing winks to the camera saying 'this is crap and we know it' - everything is played for laughs and I suppose that is its long running appeal.

Most modern comedy has got to be anarchic, in your face or 'oh so clever' these days. There really isn't room for these style of comedians on our screens any more. It's the Saturday night entertainment shows that used to be staple viewing back in the 70's and 80's. Now those comedians are banished to our seaside towns to scrape a living playing in their dingy end of the pier shows. I suppose there is still an audience for this kind of humour, and it's amazing that its children that respond so well to it.

Children still laugh at people falling over, or being smacked on the head with a wooden plank. When you add a long drawn out whistle to someone falling down the stairs it instantly becomes funny -the Carry On films lasted over thirty films using this technique. The Chuckle Brothers too haven't changed their formula either. They're the AC/DC of children's TV - churning out the same product year on year. If it ain't broke why fix it?
