Advantages: Doesn't take itself too seriously
Disadvantages: none
Most aspirational drama on TV leaves me cold, with many offerings using the ‘Slice o’ life’ format opting for depressing or downright improbable plot devices. It all looks so good on the trailer, but the reality of several hours exposure to child prostitution, ‘bent copas’ and adulterous wives/hubbies is less than satisfying not to mention unsavoury. So it was with this battle hardened mindset I first viewed Cold Feet on its first series repeat run, expecting little and fearing the worst. To say I was pleasantly surprised would do no justice to my initial reaction to this Comedy/Drama masterpiece. It was almost as if it was scripted exclusively for me. I could identify with the characters motivations and situations, sympathise and empathise with their loses and achievements. I have not extracted so much vicarious pleasure since observing the class heart-throb trapping his fingers in the classroom door and bursting into tears in front of his adoring harem at junior school. I’m not a teacher by the way, I was 10 when the above incident happened! It revolves around three couples, and their trials and tribulations. Pete and Jenny, they’ve been married for years and are showing the strains of a couple who have let things grow stale and who take each other for granted. Adam and Rachel have just got it together after the second series mainly focusing on their painful break-up. Everything seems fresh and rosy in their life, a good contrast to Pete and Jenny. Finally there is David and Karen. David is a social climber who frequently neglects his family to further his career prospects, while Karen attempts to remind him of his paternal commitments. The show has just started its third series on ITV (Sunday at 9.00pm), and its quality and ability to make me laugh and, dare I say it? – cry, has not diminished. I recognise this won’t be for everyone, and in fact anyone under the age of 2
0 will be completely mystified by couply nature of the program. But if on the other hand you fall into the 30-something age group, and have ‘someone’ in your life, I would thoroughly recommend this excellent television drama, it may have been especially written for YOU too.
