Advantages: some very funny bits
Disadvantages: Z list celebs just after attention
WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
Once a year, this charity appeal jumps onto our screens for a fun night of celebrity antics, where the top and bottom of the celebrity food chain come together to entertain us, all in the name of raising money for the UK and Africa. This year's comic relief is on Friday 13th March.
IS IT ANY GOOD:
Comic Relief has become a national treasure, and is something most kids seem to look forward to each year. The days of Lenny Henry are long gone, with a whole host of celebrities now at the helm.
This year is bigger than ever before, with a wide variety of events taking place (read all about them here http://www.rednoseday.com/whats_on). However, this is a review, so let me tell you what I think about it.
To me, there are two distinct sides to RND. Firstly, the celebrity involvement. Each year, many of the top entertainment stars from the world of TV come together to raise money. This year the likes of Ricky Gervais and Jonathan Ross are good examples of those involved, and you can guarrantee there'll be a lot of comedy taking place. It's always nice to see these sort of people giving back, and they definitely do it out of the good of their hearts as they don't need the exposure or the money the exposure will bring.
Secondly, there are the Z list celebrities who take part. I always find this a bit hard to stomach, as clearly these are people who have been off the telly for a bit and will do anything to get back in the limelight. Patrick McGuinness was on 'Let's Dance for Comic Relief' the other day, and I just thought "yeah mate, you need the charity yourself".
Perhaps it's a bit cynical, but I can't help but think this ulterior motive drives a lot of those involved.
Anyway, this year looks like it will be a good one. The 'Let's Dance for Comic Relief' has been really funny, and I love the look of 'Kilimanjaro - The Big Red Nose Climb', where a mix of celebs attempt to climb the mountain. I shan't be watching the whole show live, but BBC Iplayer will be well used to pick out the best bits, and no doubt the funniest moments will make their way onto Youtube.com a day or two after it's all over.
Summary: watch the best bits on youtube
