      Something for everyone

Coronation Street is Britain's longest running soap opera, now running for over 50 years and has always been popular since the outset.

It's set in the fictional town of Weatherfield, which is on the outskirts of Manchester. It's actually filmed in Manchester itself so any of the outside shots will be familiar to anyone who knows the city.

On the street where it's set, Coronation Street, we follow the lives of all the families through all their ups and downs. The programme has dealt with a huge variety of storylines and always deals with them sensitively and presented with proper research having been done. Abortions and miscarriages, drug addiction, murders, domestic violence, death and destruction. If there are any serious issues being dealt with, they often have a phone number of a helpline for anyone to call if they're being affected by any of the issues.

And, of course, no soap would be complete if half the characters weren't having affairs and sleeping with anyone that comes along!

It's not all serious, however. There are a few comedy relief characters in the form of Steve McDonald, Lloyd Mullaney (played by Craig Charles of Dave Lister fame in Red Dwarf), Kirk Sutherland and Beth Tinker. These characters rarely have serious storylines and I think that's how it differs from Eastenders in that the whole programme isn't all doom and gloom when these characters are around.

Obviously it doesn't represent real life, there is no street in the world that has all this drama going on all at the same time, but then no one would watch it if it was based on real life as it isn't always that interesting.

I think Coronation Street is very entertaining with a good mix of serious and funny storylines with characters for everyone to relate to.

        Getting worse?

Coronation Street is a soap which has just celebrated their 50th birthday! It has shown over 7620 episodes over that period, and you can watch it on ITV1 on Monday at 7.30 and 8.30, Thursday 8.30, and Friday 7.30 and 8.30. Each episode is 30 minutes long and the show has and will feature many different actors and actresses.

The story is set in Greater Manchester, on a street, and if you hadn't already guessed it's called Coronation Street (!). The show is about characters that live on Coronation Street and how they all have their own problems, but their pathways all cross at some point.

The storyline features the usual soap material: pregnancy, pub-fights, the odd murder ect. Sometimes the show can be very simular to other shows, such as Eastenders, but Corrie character's make the show unique.

The storyline is difficult to keep continually running for 50 years, so from that aspect I think the writers, cast and crew have done a great job with the show so far, but, nowadays their efforts are becoming futile due to some of the reoccuring stories. Some of the episodes are slighty predictable and a little bit boring, but on the other hand, some episodes are interesting and keep you on the edge of your chair.

Not for everyone, but I love it

Coronation Street is a British soap which celebrated its 50th birthday last year. The soap is set in the fictional town of Weatherfield, in Northern England-Manchester to be exact. Coronation Street is shown on ITV, and there are normally five 30 minute episodes aired per week. The normal schedule for the show is:

          Monday: 7:30-8pm
          8:30-9pm

          Thursday: 7:30-8pm

          Friday: 7:30-8pm
          8:30-9pm

Coronation Street is one of my absolute favourite programmes and it has been for around 12 years, and will probably continue to be for a long time. I currently live in France but I still never miss an episode, which some of my friends think is ridiculous (they may have a point) but I'm not going to lie about my love for this programme!

The soap is mainly set in one Street, which funnily enough is called Coronation Street. Like most soap operas there are several regular characters who feature in most episodes, these are mainly families and some of them have been in the soap for years, for example The Websters or The Barlows. Some of these characters and families are extremely well established and well known in the Street and have been in it for years. Ken Barlow however, is the only character who has been in the soap the full 50 years and featured in the first ever episode.

The street has several businesses such as the garage, the café, the corner shop, the underwear factory, the hairdressers, and most famously The Rovers Return pub. All the people who own/run/work for these businesses are regular characters in the soap, and all these places are often where various scenes are set. Apart from these places, most scenes are set in various characters homes, or in the street itself. I'd say most of the soap is set in the Rover's Return Pub, as every single character is in there at some point, most of them being regulars.

Coronation Street has dealt with many issues since I have been watching it such as sexuality, teen pregnancy, crime, murder, death, prostitution, rape, affairs, alcoholism, and bigamy. Obviously as it is a family programme and is shown fairly early, these issues have to be dealt with a certain way, and I personally think the soap has handled most of these storylines well.

Not only does the soap deal with big story lines and drama, but it also makes me laugh. More so recently than ever before, I find some of the characters hilarious. Steve Mcdonald is my personal favourite, but I also think Eileen Grimshaw, Rosie Webster, Sean Tulley, Sally Webster, and David Platt are all very entertaining. When the soap isn't dealing with big storylines there are normally smaller stories going on as well as short and entertaining scenes.

Many people argue that watching soap operas such as Coronation Street is a complete waste of time, as it is essentially watching a load of fictional characters go about their daily lives, with a few storylines thrown in. I can see where people are coming from with this argument, but for me it's just a couple of hours a week away from the real world where I can watch and enjoy a bit of light hearted telly about people who I can relate to in one way or another.

Overall, as I'm sure you can guess I love Corrie, as I think it has the perfect balance between dramatic and interesting storylines as well as funny and light hearted banter. Not only that but it's Northern and so am I.

            really good

Coronation street has been on our screens for over 50 years. Its such a great soap for all the family. I watch it, my mum watches it and so many people i talk to about it watches it. Overall it is really good, but it does seem like the writers are running out of stories as it does seem rather strange at times but its still good to watch. Cobbled streets and terraced housing i admit doesnt sound that fascinating but try it for a couple of weeks and you will certainly be hooked. Iv been watchign it since the age of about 11 and its just fascinating what stories the writers camn come up with next. Tram crashes, Murderers, fake deaths.... the stories just never seize to amaze me. For 11 years iv been watching it and i definately think i will be watching it for another 11 years.

The only soap to rival eastenders so watch it

Coronation street is a classic all time favourite soap for not only myself but for many many people, however in recent months Im not sure whether it has changed writers or the writers have simply gone a little mad.

The programme is on every monday at 7.30pm and 8.30pm, wednesday 7.30pm and then again on friday at the same times as monday so a double bill really.

It has been going for 50 years now and each and every year it has the craziest story lines and albiet many of them are based on real life, this life then goes into absolute madness mode and I feel lately their storylines have gone a little bit to far, so much so they are funny.

The tram line crash was quite spectacular and a very good storyline, however the breakdown of the marriage between kevin and sally is a little boriing now as well as the storyline with the dead colin and the murderer fizzes husband being almost humourous about his acts of murder. Im not sure where this storyline is heading but its certainly one that is now dragging and needs to be concluded. I havent felt this in the past with coronation street as usually storylines have gone on but have always been quite substancial and yet occasionally lately it has dragged in the wrong direction.

Dont get me worng however with such a popular soap and with some characters who have been in it long standing you never fail to familiarise yourself with this soap and it is endeering as well as funny and a mind number to watch in the evening to relax with.

One soap to watch for sure and possibly the only rival to eastenders.

Corrie is not so good at the moment, but I look forward to it improving

Coronation Street is a soap opera set in the fictional place of Weatherfield, Manchester, and has been on our screens for 50 years. I must admit that I find that it can go through phases. Sometimes the soap is a must watch, and I go to the effort of watching it. Other times, like at present, it is not so good. There is one original cast member, who plays Ken Barlow.

Coronation Street follows the lives of the residents of the Street, and there is always plenty of drama. In recent years we have seen murders, teenage lesbians, switched at birth storylines. I do find the humour in the Street funny. Blanche who played Ken's mother in law came out with extremely funny one-liners, and her character is very much missed. The older residents of the street who have been around for many years, make the programme feel homely, and even if I don't watch it for a year, I know that when I start to watch it again, that I will recognise people. I like the fact that there are familes that stay in it for years, and we have seen their children grow up - e.g. the Platts and Websters.

Overall at the moment, I think the Street is going through one of its weaker moments. There are big storylines promised for it's 50th birthday celebrations, including the aftermath of a tram crash, which could see much loved characters killed off. I hope the Street starts to improve. I do feel that ITV have messed around with the scheduling in recent years, and that I never know when it is on. Generally though it is an entertaining soap opera, which I hope improves soon. I am happy to watch it every so often, but don't get upset if I miss it. I will definitely be tuning in for the big birthday episodes.

                Roll on December...

As I sit here in front of the TV multi tasking... (watching Coronation Street and rating reviews) I thought I would do a review on Corrie Street...

This british soap opera has been on our screens since December 1960 and is shown on ITV1 for 30 minutes each episode..

Its set in a small place called Weatherfield which is set in Manchester.. there is still one original character, William Roach, who plays Ken Barlow married to Deidre... Whereas in Eastenders it all seems quite young, I always look at Corrie as being quite an old fashioned soap... That probably doesn't do it justice as the story lines are just as current as Enders and the characters are a mix of young and old...however there does seem to be underlying currents of tradition and that may be because of how old the soap has been running...

You do find that the older characters seem to stick around for much longer and that newer characters tend to come and go... you also find that the street tends to have one main storyline going so sometimes you find that you don't see characters for some weeks... having said that they have two main storylines at the moment...Gail's trial and also Tony escaping from prison... however I do find that the bigger storylines do drag out for quite a while so I do lose interest...

I do prefer it to Enders though if I'm honest... maybe its because I prefer their storylines at the moment but I do find it more believable...

I've read that in December 2010 that they will be having some real juicy storylines to celebrate their 50 years so watch this space...

must see in case you miss anything interesting.

I have watched this program for absolutely forever , and sometimes i do wonder why i watch it all , i think it is probably because it has been part of my tv timetable for so long that i am frightened i might miss something , the key storyline at the moment is Gail Mcintyre, who is at the moment on trial for murdering her husband Joe Mcintrye , which she didn't do , but the police think they have a good case, they had only been married about a week and the went away to the lakes , and he wanted to fake his own death so she could claim on the life insurance, well it all went wrong and ended up dead. The police have even done a dirty deal with Tracey Barlow to get her to get gail to admit to the murder , so that she can have lighter sentance so that she would be able to see her daughter Amy more often, the climax of this saga finishes on friday 4th of June so i will be tuned it so see out it ends. Coronation street is now filmed in HD from the 31st May in honour of seige week , where Tony Gordon breaks out of prison in order to try to kill Carla and Hayley , the climax to this storyline is also 4th of June. Typical Coronation street , nothing happens for weeks and then the two big storylines at the same time .

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

                One of Britains favourite soaps

Aaah good old Corrie, it's been on our screens since 1960, a soap set in the fictitious town of weatherfield which is a suburb of Manchester.

I must admit I'm a Corrie addict despite not being a little blue rinsed old woman. In fact it's fast catching up with Eastenders as my favourite soap. It is somewhat lighter and less depressing than Eastenders (which isn't difficult) with storylines taking on a less tragic stance than Eastenders. A recent comical story saw the long suffering Norris being held against his will by a slightly odd but undeniably harmless Mary Taylor ala Misery.

For me it is a light relief from Easties due in part to the fact that it's hard to take someone with a northern accent too seriously (not wishing to offend anyone), but it is true, if you try saying "theres been a Murder" in a scouse or Manc accent it doesn't have the same impact.

My favourite characters of all time include Curly Watts the sex bomb, Norris and Fred Elliot I say Fred Elliot who reminds me of the churchill dog : )

A more recent addition to the street is David Platts old cell mate Graeme, who is a butchers apprentice and a very funny character, currently pursuing the glamour puss and all round hottie Rosie Webster.

Through a mixture of comedic characters, light hearted storylines and northerness Corrie earns it's place as one of Britains best loved soaps, it's been around for donkeys years and hopefully will continue to be for a long while yet.

I think it's fair to say that 90% of you will have watched the occasional episode of Corrie and I'm sure I'm not the only saddo who is addicted but for the minority who haven't watched it I absolutely reccomend it to all soap lovers and anyone who gets fed up with the seriousness and morose tone of Corries southern counterpart.

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

Could be better, maybe its time to go?

Coronation street is the ITV's flagship soap and is on endlessly.

It's fair to say that I particularly detest soaps, they have over the last ten years or so started to take over TV programming with increasing hour 'specials' and tend to have Christmas Day major events. This tendency is for me a sad day for TV in general because it feels like the channel planners are being rather lazy and filling their time with soap rather than investing in interesting programme funding and taking a few risks along the way.

However, that's not Coronation streets fault and they are in a sense a victim of their own success. When it was originally aired, or at least in the Eighties when I cna first remember having to watch the programme at my Nan's it used to be twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.30 for half an hour. Now it's on at least 4 times a week and has alternate time slots and one night is one twice that night. So is it worth watching?

Well it's never been my favourite amongst the soaps, I've always viewed it as a bit dull and steady compared to more edgy 'younger' soaps whether that be Eastenders, Hollyoaks or Emmerdale. But it did have periods of being at least interesting viewing, when they had a lot of humour along with the stories with characters like the Duckworths and Reg Holdsworth.

Now the stories are dull, tend to be associated with the younger generation so have a high amount of sex, marriage breakups and fights. The humour and cutting dialogue has long since gone and the sense of it being a leading programme into a programme that has lost its way.

                  One final thing

Can Gail please stop going out with complete nutters and why do they find her attractive with her horrible hair do and wierd squeezed face?

I think it should go back to being a three times a week show, trim the number of main stars and concentrate on stories and not sex and violence.

If they don't with the loss of The Bill is it time for the show to go as well?

One day i will shake this

For as long as I can remember my mum has been a fan of this show and from the age of 5 and onwards, I ended up sitting in front of the screen while this was being played. As the years have passed I have a confession to make, I actually like this show.

Set in a suburb of Manchester, the fictional area called Weatherfield, the soap has been extremely successful and a mainstay for decades upon decades.

As you would expect from any of these soaps, realism is not the aim of the show. Instead what the show offers is some extremely over the top, action packed storylines. My street doesn't have even a sixth of the drama this show has. There are murders, muggings, suicides, affairs galore and yet more unpredictable happenings.

There are some excellent characters in this soap and it's a combination of long established characters as well as new characters. My favourite characters in the show are Steve and Lloyd as they inject some much neeed humour into the show and allow some breathing space from the more serious storyline. Both are excellent in their roles and really add value to the script.

Elsewhere I think some of the younger actors are more a hindrance than a benefit. Such as Ryan who seems far too wooden and his equally annoying girlfriend. The acting overall though is very good and some of the stars have great versatility as their stories are forever changing, placing differing demand on their acting.

Some of my friends shake their heads in disbelief when i admit I like this and while I have reduced my viewing of this show, I can't seem to shake it. However there is just something about it.

                      Disadvantages

The best soap in England bar none!

I wont bore you with the history of Coronation Street, that's why we have wikipedia. However for the past 8 years Coronation Street or Corrie has come out of the boring 'lets do gritty storylines' niche that so many soaps fall in to and has carved out a new one.

In Corrie's case they developed the startegy of having normal everyday storylines and injecting comdey into them. Yes they always do have one out there storyline, currently featuring Gail and her husbands accidental death, but it never feels too much. If you compare it with the other soaps such as Eastenders and Emmerdale, which usually have 5 gritty storylines and maybe one comedy storyline it can get very tiring and repetitive.

The characters always feel very established, even the newer additions seem to have cult followings due to thei likeable mannerisms. Becky and Graeme are probably the most notable. Older characters like Ken, Emily and Rita all still get their own storylines, which is nice to see as I hate having an all young cast. It just doesn't seem natural not to have old people.

Overall I really enjoy sitting down with a cup of tea watching Corrie which can be seen on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays however this is sometimes subject to change if and when the football is on.

                        good long running soap opera

I love soap operas and but I do not watch them all, I only usually watch Eastenders, Emmerdale and Coronation Street, but my all time favourite is Coronation Street and it is often called Corrie for short.

The very first episode was broadcast on the 9th December 1960, and it was recorded live at the time and it was broadcast in black and white, not colour. I even remember watching it in black and white and when the colour arrived, I was like oh wow, it was amazing seeing the switch of the colours, but some people will not remember that happening,

It is a about a street that is in Weather field, near Manchester, and the programme is famous for the cobbled street, and the street itself has old terraced houses on one side and new build on the other, it has a corner shop, pub, garage and a newspaper shop. It also has a health centre and chippie but they are hardly ever used in the programme which is a shame.

It's creator is Tony Warren and it is the longest British soap in the UK.

It is made by Granada now called ITV Studios.

One of the character Ken Barlow is one of the only original cast members and has been since 1960 and has been in the programme from the very beginning and he still remains a favourite with many of the public, he has had many wives and children and affairs and his story lines have been very good over the years.

Some of the old characters I remember, I am showing my age now, they were Ena Sharples, Elsie Tanner, Albert Tatlock, Minnie Coldwell to name a few and the landlady of the pub The Rovers Return was called Annie Walker and her hubby Jack, and they had a son called Billy.

It used to be aired on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays at 7.30pm for 30 minutes but now it is at different times, usually Monday and Fridays at the same time but Wednesdays changed to Thursday, and all the changes kind of make me forget it can be on the television as it can be different times sometimes, and also there are double episodes on Mondays and Fridays.

In the year 2000 on December the 8th it was broadcast live again to celebrate 40 years on the telly and the episode was an hour long and it all was fine on the day, everyone was kind of nervous as you can imagine but it went down well with the public and was successful.

This year it celebrates the 50th year and that is an amazing achievement in British television and I would think they are going to celebrate with something very special although it is rumoured there will not be another live programme, which is good because that has already been done before but they are thinking of doing some other ITV spin off programmes, but I am not sure what that may be.

I cannot imagine life without this soap as I have watched it all my life and I had just turned a year old when it was first broadcast.

You either love or hate this programme but I love it and it is my favourite soap.

I am sure everyone has seen at least one episode of this show but if you have not I suggest you take a look and see if you may like it.

                        I give it 5 stars.

Thank you for reading my review.

Watch it and see for yourself.

Coronation Street, the British soap that everyone has heard of, it is huge competition for its rival soap - Eastenders. It's so popular, that many pubs in tourist destinations through Europe now have soap nights, so holiday makers don't miss what's happening on the street! It takes up two and a half hours a week of our precious time, being shown ITV1 twice on Monday, once on Thursday, and twice again on Friday. Then god knows how many repeats on ITV2

Set in Manchester, Coronation Street compromises of a row of terrace houses, a couple of semis's, a garage, a knicker factory, hairdressers, two shops, a bookies, a taxi firm, a pub & a wine bar! All within 500 metres of each other! The soap tries to represent the typical way of life for the average family, with a few added murders!

There are the average hard working family like the Webster's. Kevin is a mechanic who runs a garage and his wife Sally works in Underworld sewing knickers. These have two daughters called Sophie and Rosie. Most people will know a true to family like the Websters, without families like this on the soap, it wouldn't seem true to life at all.

There are also the typical benefit seeking families shown, like the Windass's, Eddie Windass claims disability benefits, whilst working for a taxi company. I'm sure we all know of people similar to Eddie!

Other familes include the Barlows, Platt's, Grimshaws, and the list goes on. There are very likable characters, like Norris Cole who owns a sweet shop, very well played. The crazy thing is, that everyone who lives on Coronation St, works there, drinks there, shops there, have their cars serviced there and probably buy knock off knickers out the factory!

Most of the show is filmed in the Rovers Return, the streets very own pub. I am not sure how the pub makes a profit, as most of the drinks tend to be on the house, I wish i had a pub like this close to home! Everyone on the street knows everyone else, every wedding, funeral etc has everyone from the street attend. I suppose it saves spending money on extra's

I tend to find the story lines on Coronation Street a bit boring, not much really happens and sometimes you can watch an episode with nothing interesting at all. My girlfriend watches every one, but personally i don't bother until their is a murder or something to keep my interested. You can not watch it for weeks on end, and not really get out of touch with regards to what's happening, it doesn't take much catching up. A few years back there was a guy called Richard Hillman, he married Gail Platt, (who i can't stand) and tried to kill her, so I loved him for that. When they think of a story line like this, its well worth a watch. Unfortunately, as with all good characters, they ran out of stories for him and killed him off.

When i am watching a soap, i always tend to take them too seriously and seem to spend more time looking for mistakes than i do actually listening to the story. Characters drinking from empty cups is very common, doors without locks, walls that shake when a door is slammed and cars without tax discs. I guess it is just a soap and you have to look beyond this - just me being picky. One thing i will point out, which you should look out for when you watch it - you will see Kevin always has the same red metro in his garage for repair. Every time i glance at the TV it's there being fiddled with, ( If i owned that metro i would be complaining )

Overall, if you are bored, its worth a watch, there are the occasional funny bits that you can have a giggle at, but personally i find the majority if it boring, and a waste of time really. If i had the choice, i would watch Eastenders, there seems to be more going on and keeps your interest more.

Three out of five from me.
