Advantages: A great great institution
Disadvantages: None
Britain's longest running and best soap opera continues to shine after more than 40 years on the television!
I grew up with Coronation Street and in my day it wa sonly on twice a week....We used to sit as a family. glued to the TV and excited about what was going to happen. A few years back now, Granada Plus (an old digital TV channel) started showing the earlier episodes and they were great! A real trip down memory lane!
There have been some incrdible story lines through all the years that I have been watching the show, one of the first that I can really remember well was the affair between Deirdre Barlow and Mike Baldwin....it was so different back then...and what clever script writers not only to keep the story line going (with many feuds in the following years), but also, to have Mike Baldwin die in Ken's arms...genius.
The characters are obviously served by fine actors...and many famous faces have started in the street or continued in the street to become household names. The casting is brilliant also...everytime I see Deirdre and Blanche together I say to the other half...'that is the best casting in the world!'
They also have a great group of story writers who keep the street fresh and also able to deal with many issues, but often in a more jovial manner than say Eastenders.
Some of the best story lines from recent years include:
David Platt nearly killing Gail
The death of Vera Duckworth
Rosie Webster and the dodgy teacher!
The writers use a great mix of northern comedy and camp humour to make the show light hearted in parts, which works really well...I enjoy seeing the old folks on the street having their bitchy conversations about people and moaning about all and everything!
A few years back a new director took over the show and cleared out some characters - she was asked if she intended to get rid of any of the older members of the cast.
Her answer was something along the lines of 'oh god no! They are national institutions...if I was to try and get rid of Ken Barlow or Emily Bishop it would be headline news'.
I could not agree more.
Summary: A great British treat!
