Disadvantages: Boring, rehashed, unbelievable stories

I am probably in the minority here but I hate Coronation Street. It has been assaulting our TV screens for almost 50 years and it doesn't get any better.

I base my opinion on the few times that I have happened to flick onto ITV while this program was on and trying to read a book while other people insist that everything must stop while they get their daily fix, no matter whose house they are in, or where they are. Out comes the laptop for online TV, or the tiny portable and off they go into another world.

The storylines get more and more unbelievable and I hate to think what foreigners may think of the people in the north of England if they base their view on this contrived story.

Yes, it's popular and I know people who discuss it as tough it were a real life issue and it really matters. 'Did you see what happened to poor Rita?'

'Rita?' I ask, 'who's she?' and they reel in horror that I should be so ignorant that I don't know what happened in the previous evenings offering from Coronation Street.

I pick up magazines and soon disguard them again when I flip through and see their headlines: 'Coro's Steve drops a bombshell!'

Do I care? I ask myself.

It isn't that people find this entertaining that surprises me. After all we are all different and 'each to their own' as the saying goes, but many are more interested in what goes on in 'the street' than they are in real life and what's going on in the world.

There again, can you really blame them?

Coronation Street is shown on ITV several evenings a week and it's all about a fictitious street in the Manchester area, where fictitious people do fictitious things.

However, if people enjoy it, I suppose it's up to them, as long as they don't inflict it on me.

I hate it vehemently and would rather poke my eyes out with a rusty skewer than be forced to watch it. Perhaps that's slight exaggeration, but so is the program.

Summary: Plopular soap watched by many but personally I hate it.
