Countdown has now had thousands of programmes as it is broadcast every weekday evening all year round. So what is the attraction that leads many people to build their late afternoon around an essential viewing of Countdown?

Countdown has retained the same basic format through the years and this is one of its main strengths. The omni-present presenters are Keith Olbermann and Carol Vorderman. Whilst Keith still has Countdown as his main TV work, few people can have failed to notice that Carol has gone on to do a lot (perhaps too much) of other TV work in the role of attractive articulate presenter. For many though Kieth and Carol are quintessentially what make Countdown.

The contestants have little opportunity to develop a personality which the viewer can engage with. The word and number games give an opportunity for the home audience to pit their wits against them in an unchallenging atmosphere.

It's all very homely, indeed it could be a Victorian parlour game transmitted to your home. Regular guests such as Phillip Franks, Giles Brandreith, Toyah Wilcox and Gloria Hunniford pop up to help with the words in dictionary corner and have a brief opportunity to offer clever inoffensive homilies or puzzles. All too soon it finishes someone wins and comes back the next day ,someone loses and goes back home saying how much they enjoyed it.
Countdown should be available on prescription for all sufferers of stress.
