Advantages: Very useful and insightful programme

Disadvantages: Bit disturbing at times

Crimewatch UK all started in 1984 when it came to our screens and despite being quite disturbing at times with the reconstructions of crimes that have been committed in the UK, it is a programme that has been very helpful in bringing criminals to justice by calling on the public for help as to whether they have seen anything. It is a way of jogging people's memories or even persuading them to come forward if they have any information about crimes shown. I haven't watched this recently but used to watch it all the time in it's earlier years on BBC. The programme is usually shown once a month.

The best two presenters for me were the originals who were Nick Ross and Sue Cook. Over the years they have changed and Jill Dando and then Fiona Bruce came in. Nowadays it's Kirsty Young and Matthew Amroliwala who currently host the show. It was of course Nick Ross that founded the now famous saying at the end of each show - 'Don't have nightmares - sleep well'.

As stated the programme features reconstructions of unsolved serious crimes in the UK and this is the reason the show is aired after the 9pm watershed as it can be emotional to watch and is definately not suitable for children. In addition on the programme pictures of individuals are shown that have been caught on CCTV for crimes such as robbery etc. to see if anyone recognises them. They also have a police officer who comes in each month with recovered items from raids etc.

Throughout the programme telephone numbers are shown across the screen so you can ring anonymously of course if you know anything at all that might aid the investigation. Each programme lasts about an hour and is invaluable in helping the police. I'm not sure how many convictions have been made because of the programme but it's extremely useful in my eyes and interesting so can't do any harm.

Summary: Very useful and interesting programme
